Lincoln was 6'4", Lewis is 6'1"..... That can easily be worked out while filming....

Didn't Levi Strauss sell jeans to Calif. goldminers in the 1840s and Phil Knight sold Nikes in the uhhhh....
I saw it on TV!

Seriously, I am really looking forward to this movie.
DDL couldn't be a better choice for Lincoln IMO.

Agreed, hearing that news helped me get over the untrue rumors a while back that he would be the Riddler in this next Dark Knight film.

Indeed, a friend doing make up effects (scars, burns, cuts) on this film was given 2 conditions for working on the set: 1) never make eye contact with Daniel Day Lewis, and 2) if you ever have to talk to him, address him as Mr. President or Mr. Lincoln or President Lincoln.

Yeah, well...we know he is a "method" actor.
However, what really MATTERS is results....and (if history is any indicator) DDL is doing somethin' right.

Whenever he stands next to someone just use the shaky-cam or add lens flare. Heck, get real creative and use both.

At first, I thought it a little diva-ish too. But Daniel Day Lewis is an excellent actor, and if his main request is that the film crew avoid breaking his concentration whenever possible by helping him stay in character when he's on the set, then I don't think that's too much to ask for.

Maybe, but not making eye contact is a bit over the top. I guess some talented people are jerks in real life like the rest of the population.

If he is a method actor there are no limits to his methods as long as hes not breaking any laws. I dont think he is a jerk since its not always a benefit for him. (Since not every part he is playing is a president)

From wikipedia
Quote:

He lost a substantial amount of weight for the part, kept his Northern Irish accent on and off the set for the entire shooting schedule, and spent stretches of time in a prison cell. He also insisted that crew members throw cold water at him and verbally abuse him

I guess the postive sideeffect of this is that he gets his coactors to not only act, but react.

But I wouldnt want the work as his assistant when he played Bill the Butcher.

Ask yourself this (if you were hired to play the part in a major Motion Picture): how difficult would it be to play a dead Abe Lincoln?

I guess as difficult as it would be to play anyone who wasn't me.

Calling him a jerk was a bit much. He is definitely eccentric, and goes to lengths few, if any, other actors do. He really isn't an actor in the truest sense of the word because he needs to "become" his character to do his job.

The results speak for themselves though.

Transforming yourself to another person is good acting.

Pretending to be someone else for a role is acting. When you spend months/years in character, it becomes something different. He is no longer himself during that time. Can you understand my point? I know he does excellent work, but at a heavy cost to himself, and those around him.

Hasn't Depp been reported to do the same thing? I could have sworn I'd read or watched something from Hunter Thompson commenting on how Depp followed him around for months studying and watching, learning his mannerisms, speech style, tone, hand gestures, etc. for Fear and Loathing. Essentially transforming into that person for the duration of the film.

Noomi Rapace got lost within the character when she was in the Stieg Larsson series. Think of Christian Bale's legendary outburst. I don't think this is unusual.

Yeah on set it's fair, I thought this would apply everywhere like in that cafeteria or when he's walking to his trailer stuff like that.

I believe "method" acting was much more common during Hollywood's Golden Years than it is today.

Maybe somebody here can share some of the old horror stories of method acting of yesteryear?
I'll bet Josh has a lot of stuff in that movie encyclopedia in his head he could share...
