Being Oliver Stone, there must be some kind of political message within this hyper-violent drug movie. I'll pass.

I don't know....on paper before seeing the trailer I absolutely wanted to see this with Blake lively, Travolta, Hayak, and Del toro in some drug cartel world. But after seeing the trailer it looked a little too much like another Traffic. Plus the 2 lead young dudes I don't know them, never heard of them made me irk some. I don't get this casting move, Stone used the big names for the supporting roles but some unknown punks for the leads. Should be the way around.

Why shouldn't he do something different, for once. We complain about the never end rehashing machine, then complain when someone does something different. Isn't giving new faces a real chance in a movie backed up by heavier weights something that should be going on more, not less?

Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Emile Hirsch (lots and lots of movies), and Aaron Johnson (AKA Kick Ass) are not unknowns. They just look so different in this they are hardly recognizable.

Seems like a very standard action film, so I think Stone just wanted a nice fat paycheck.

^^^ +1...I keep seeing this trailer pop up everywhere and it already feels tired. I think you're right. Nothing new here at all, just rehashed and borrowed crap. . The Salma Hayek character seems like an obvious lazy thing Oliver stole from Pulp fiction's Uma thurman's character. Everything about this feels rip offed and done 1000x already. And adding insult to injury who the heck is this Taylor Kitsch besides being miscast-ed in John carter..what else has he done? .the other unknown bozo looks like a poor man's Seann William Scott. But after all that, I'll probably end up seeing on BD when there's nothing else to watch mostly for Travolta and Lively.

this movie will bomb hugely because Mr. Creepy Spa Massage is in it, his career is pretty much over, like Mel Gibson's.

Haven't seen it myself, but I've read the book, and it's quite good. Quite erotic, lots of dialogue, and it moves very quickly. I can see how it could have turned into something very conventional, or into something the previews could make appear to be conventional. The way the book is written could easily just not be replicable in a movie, too.

I lived right in the midst of where the narrative is set, too, so that contributed to my enjoyment of it. South Orange County.

Go on imdb boards and you'll see Blake Lively being massacred for her performance and narration. The consensus is that she pretty much sunk the film by herself. Whatever, there's nothing else to watch so I'll watch it as soon as those blokes at BB send me my copy

My biggest beef is that her sex scenes(including one in a bath tub), as well as those of another actress, were fully clothed. frown.gif

I'm not trying to be shallow, but it is completely unrealistic. If the actress really doesn't want her boobies to be shown they can film the scene to obscure the private parts (or hire another actress). But to have sex in a tub (with a guy who is nude) with a top on is just silly. I'm going to start referring to this as "Jessica Alba Syndrome". Constantly appear in movies as strippers/prostitutes who never take off their bras in the line of duty. rolleyes.gif

I did kinda enjoy this flick despite my criticism. It looks nice and has a good soundtrack.

This was a good one fellas. I love, LOVE movies like this: a little bit of scarface and True romance where young naive kids get in over their heads with drug cartels underworld which is one of my all time fav. And I think oliver stone co-wrote True romance with Tarantino and it really shows esp the narration with Lively and Patricia arquette. And the ending was very reminiscent of True romance.

Travolta is awesome as always. Hayak surprised me quite a bit a the big boss from the trailer I didn't think she would be convincing but she's another class act. But the biggest surprise for me were the 2 newbies which you all know I hate from Carter of mars and Aaron Johnson which annoyed me in Kick ass. They redeemed themselves big time and was totally engrossed in their characters. Lastly, I just don't get all the hate on IMDB for Blake's acting and her narration. She was fine and did her part as good as any actress what was written for..prob just bunch of plants or fanboys from the Twilight camp trying to bring this down.

And I of course love the 2.15 running time which is too bad for sog35. Oliver maybe old and not in his prime A game but he sure can put together a great drama action gem better than most. There's some really, gritty violent acts as you would expect from the guy who brought you Scarface and it was barbaric and tough to watch but that's also what made this movie so engrossing and enveloping. I was hooked and sinker from the 1st min. The only bad was the rental copy PQ was very noisy and not good at all so watching this in BD would be well worth it.

EDIT: the rental did not give you the option to watch the uncut version so I'm def going watch that on BD. Hope it's longer and more violent too.

EDIT 2: I totally forgot Ben Del toro as the mexican gardener Lardo. I loved his funny accent and my fav character no doubt in the movie. I can't wait to watch it again just for him.

WHAT??? What the heck do you want? did you mix this with your porn dvds? the sex was as real as you can get, the tub part just one scene which was beautifully shot. Why didn't you bring up the opening scene with the 1st dude which was right up there with Showtime's late night adult films minus the nudity. Just to show tits is so minute and stupid. If this is your beef then you're watching the wrong movie.

eek.gif Not if they're really nice tits. They can be a couple of rays of sunshine in an otherwise dreary cinematic experience. I think Hollywood needs a special Hall of Fame for young, beautiful women who aren't afraid to "get their kit off" in the line of duty. They make the world a little better place. God bless 'em. smile.gifwink.gif

There IS a difference between R-rated movies and porn.

I am not a big fan of deliberately titillating (excuse the pun) mainstream movies.
If I want porn, I know where to find it.

On screen sex with a woman wearing her bra or a top IS distracting because it's not realistic. It always yanks me out of a film and I cannot help but think, "that actress has a no nudity clause."

It is what it is.

Exactly, good for you oinkster. For a pig, you're not so bad. When I see gratuitous sex or nudity it just cheapens the whole feel to a B grade movie made for late night HBO.

And one of the most erotic and arousing stuff doesn't require nudity..Like The postman rings twice with Nicholson and Lange, that's prob the best sex scene ever filmed IMHO. Stone did a great job here as well with the camara without having to reveal everything.

I am FAR from being a prude, but gratuitous sex/nudity doesn't endear me to a movie (except as a parody).
For me, it's STORY AND CHARACTERS that count.wink.gif

Got 2/3 of the way thru and had to let it go.

With the comic bookish, super-saturated color palate and the opening voice-over indicating something different is going on, I thought OK...he is giving the drug business the satirical treatment, as he did with American violence in NBK.
So, I gave it some lee-way, some time to develop.
I waited, and then waited some more.....
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
A 3-way sex scene with a fully clothed Blake Lively....really?rolleyes.gif
The Afghanistan ambush sequence...really?rolleyes.gif
For a pot operation of that size, 300 lbs. was difficult to get ahold of....really?rolleyes.gif
I could go on....
There are just too many eye-rolling moments for a movie like this.

I am not sure what Stone is doing here and I doubt he actually knows himself.
Ultimately, I realized Savages was an unfocused, half-ass Tarantino flick, or at least that's how it comes across.

Wow that's pretty tough judgement Oink, sorry you couldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did. Regarding your spoiler hang ups...I mean this is a purely crazy drug tale along the lines of like scarface, true romance , pulp fiction I can't see how would anyone expect "believability". Did you find anything remotely good? what about Lado? that alone is worth a rental in the least

The problem is the writing just isn't there.
Other than the "trio" thing, there is some good ideas floating around here.
It just isn't put together into a cohesive whole that holds my attention.
It feels disjointed, as though Stone never figured out where he is going with the material.

FWIW, the acting is VERY good....the guys and gals brought their "A Game" for Stone.

Just watched this over the weekend. Not bad. There are certainly movies out there that are worse. All in all it was pretty good and got three Netflix stars.
