My daughter texted me this photo she took when helping out with an interview that was being done before his concert last year.

I defy anyone to put some quality headphones on, drink a shot of good scotch, listen to this track, and not appreciate what Zep was all about.

Although I have the new remasters of the earlier albums, the final three were weak IMO.

Once the price comes down I'll buy them and rip what I want to disk.
The good stuff would only fill one CD.

I read once that the song " All of my Love" from "In Though The Out Door" was written by Plant as a tribute to his son who died of an infection at age five. I can't hear that song anymore without choking up a little.

Yeah like most mega high profile bands of the day, internal strife got them towards the end. There's still plenty of good stuff there, just not the stem to stern awesomeness of the earlier work.

Yes, the headphones on, preferably the over-the-ear type, and, if you can get it, a 1969 edition of the LP, mastered by "RL" (Robert Ludwig).

At least, that's how I started my Led Zeppelin listening career, in October of 1969, at age 14. There was no scotch... none needed. The raw power of the music, to my virginal 14 year old ears, was my glorious introduction to Hard Rock.

Some of the tunes on Presence don't quite work for me, but dude...Achilles Last Stand is up there with the best they ever did. For Your Life is a great tune as well, and it has one of Page's greatest guitar solos. Nobody's Fault But Mine is a fun tune. The rest of it, I can take or leave it.

In Through the Outdoor was a great disappointment for me when it came out. The best thing about it wasn't the music, but the six different covers. You never knew what cover you were going to get because the albums came in a brown paper bag sleeve. The inner sleeve had drawings that were made up of dots that you could paint like a coloring book with a brush dipped in water. Pretty impressive packaging. Pretty lame album though.

Coda had some moments, but nothing really memorable. After all, it was really snippets of leftover unreleased tracks.

Pretty much how I look at them.

I'll buy the 3, rip a CD's worth and sell or donate the original CDs.

Strife? That's funny
Booze, Powder and Success (i.e. the way to pay for the party) got them in the last half of their time. They did make something happen when they were sober enough to do so. This was SOP in the day, so we agree.

Their brand of what was really Folk music with a hard edge was original.
It was not seen as that until many years later. I think the hair and clothes masked what it was in their day, but people were drawn to it. It Worked. Robert Plant carried this same theme his entire career. Folk Music with an edge well before any one cared to label it "Crossover"

Hmmm, I have never heard this before...I need to meditate on that.

I can see it being labeled as "blues with a hard edge."
But really, trying to stick their music into a single genre is tricky, at best.
Their music was unique, even in an era of unique bands pushing new music.
Because of this, they will be remembered for a long time (IMO).

Don't be purposely obtuse. Strife is strife self inflicted or not. Don't you make me come over there with my CD's Desky.

Definitely more blues than folk. But like you said, it's not possible to pigeonhole them into a single, or even two categories. They expertly played what they wanted in a genre busting fashion much as the Beatles did. I still think Deep Purple did the whole Hard Blues thing slightly better, so you may as well red button me and get it over with.

This is pretty interesting. Audio engineer Christian Hand dissects "What is and What Should Never Be". You can hear each of the members tracks in isolation. The slide guitar track is really something. Incredible soul and touch from a then twenty year old Page.

They admitted to Folk Music thing in many interviews. Blues? Yes of course, just like almost every British band trying to cover the American style back then (some with less success than others) but the European folk influence made them vastly different. I should add - In My Opinion - how's that
