I find some of the cinematography in Game of Thrones quite stunning, so much so that I wanted to find out what camera it was shot on.

This is the point, right here. It's the drama every body likes. Really all most tv shows are just shots of people standing around and talking. *yawn*

I got enough drama in my life, thanks. I needs me some moar splosions! tongue.gif

Yeah. Okay. HBO hits one out of the park every so often.

Still... I'm not into swords, horses and dragon stuff. I'm sure it's great though.

Games of Thrones is primarily shot with the Arri Alexa, a very popular camera with feature film cinematographers. (Gravity, which just won the Cinematography Oscar, was shot with the Alexa.) The upcoming season will incorporate two new RED Dragon cameras, but it's not yet known to what extent they will be used. (Due to the division of storylines in the show, the production has several crews shooting in different countries simultaneously.)

I knew about the Alexa, but hadn't heard about the Red Dragon cameras. I was so impressed by the Alexa that it pretty much buried whatever lingering nostalgia I had for film cameras.

That is it right there. When I look at my movie collection, how many would I watch and keep watching without the home theater and A/V factor? Not many. I watch all my TV shows upstairs on my relatively small plasma with no sound system (just TV speakers) so plot, writing and acting have to carry the full load. If I have good plot and acting, I don't need the A/V factor, but without good plot and acting, the A/V factor becomes much more important for me to find value/entertainment. Again to use Breaking Bad since it is such a great show IMO, I enjoy it near as much no matter if I am watching on my 20" tube TV in my bedroom or my 9' wide projection screen/HT setup.......I cant say that about many movies.

A large proportion of the movies in my collection are older ones without a lot of modern sound and visual effects. I don't object to an impressive soundtrack (far from it!), but to me, those kind of things are supposed to support an interesting story and characters. I see far too many movies these days that are mostly about the effects, with story as an afterthought.

No doubt. Writing/acting seem to take a backseat in a lot of movies these days to the technical side.

Sorry for this on-topic post, but I finally had the time last night to sit down and watch "Gravity" for the first time.

One question of it keeps coming up in my mind: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
When she's enroute from ISS to the Chinese station, she starts hearing voices, supposedly in Chinese and starts howling like a wolf. Is that intended as part of her dream sequence with Clooney?
