One of the great things about NF is you have an opportunity to watch dozens of movies a month at a flat rate.
Most don't realize you can literally watch as many movies per month as your mail turnaround happens to be....for me, it's 3 days.

I don't have Dredd in my Blockbuster queue because they haven't even received their Dredd copies yet. Every week the counter guy says they expect them next week.

The Bestbuy near me had to take them off the shelf because they had defective copies. Fredies did not get any in either like BB. Amazon has not been problematic

The delay in most new releases is exactly why Vudu is a viable option for those that want to see a new release when it is released but don't necessarily want to buy it.

If Vudu prices are too high, try CinemaNow (for 2D)...also offers 1080p and Dolby Digital Plus but they are usually one dollar less. And sometimes Vudu is cheaper than OnDemand. For example, the 3D FRANKENWEENIE is $5.99 on Vudu and $7,99 via OnDemand. Since both Blockbuster and Amazon also offer streaming HD titles (but they don't specify audio fornats so beware...you might end up getting a big title with only Dolby Pro-Logic....happened to me a couple times) so it's sometimes best to compare. I always opt for disc and use streaming only when HD is not available via NF, BB, or Redbox

And was it supposed to make him look, um, "angry"? Cause it just looked kinda lame.

In this pic of Sly form the "older movie" review thread, you see exactly what I mean. But, I don't think his (Urban?) poor imitation is what's wrong with this film; it just doesn't really go anywhere. Lena Heady's talents are wasted, and even the hot naked girl couldn't save this for me.

I am going to my daughter and son in law's house next weekend and she tells me we will be seeing the Dredd BD. I have not yet debriefed her about the film but I gather she liked it. They have 3D displays, so I guess I will be sentenced to seeing the film that way. What the hell, though. Anything for the kids. Right?smile.gif

To be perfectly fair to my daughter and son in law, although I really don't like 3D glasses, having to watch a 3D BD on a 65 inch plasma with 5.1 audio in a dedicated home theater room is not a fate worse than death.smile.gif

My favorite variation on that theme was from Norm from Cheers:

I would love to find to find a Panasonic (Kuro wink.gif) plasma at 85" at a reasonable price....nothing exceeds the PQ of a great plasma.cool.gif

Hopefully, that Saturdays and tequila are awesome and Dredd makes it more awesomer.

I watched Dredd with my daughter and son in law Friday night and really enjoyed it. Dredd is incredibly brutal and over the top but it is also slyly funny. I liked it a lot. High marks for the casting of the talented Lena Heady as the evil Ma-Ma. I even thought that young Olivia Thrilby was good as a mutant trainee judge who has psychic powers. My only disappointment was that the usually excellent Karl Urban was wasted because half of his face was always covered in a visor. Still, Dredd had very high production values and was a feast for the eyes and ears. 7 Stars out of 10.

Let me make clear why I was bothered by Karl Urban's face being covered despite the same thing having been done to Sylvester Stallone in the original Dredd film, Judge Dredd. Urban is a fine actor with a mobile face, which he uses effectively in his performances. In stark contrast, Stallone's face is all but frozen. Thus, in Stallone's case, the moviegoing public was probably done a service by the face shield.smile.gif Unfortunately, the same device sentenced Urban to having to act with one hand tied behind his back.

Isn't that the way that the original graphic novel depicts Dredd? Dredd never shows his face. If so, then that is not a valid criticism.

Sure it is...movies are NOT comic books.
2 entirely different mediums.
However, comic books can serve as inspiration for a movie.wink.gif

Or .... you know... it can stay true to the source material. wink.gif

I think Urban did a pretty decent job considering half his face was covered.

Is this a similar issue for you all when an actor has to perform through a ton of prosthetic makeup and such?

You can be "true to the source material," but like I said...

Exactly, what was he doing with his mouth and chin (the only parts of his face shown) that qualifies as a "pretty decent job?"tongue.gif

Assuming no one actually has x-ray vision, hiding a person's face does make it difficult to tell what is being done under a ton of prosthetics/makeup....wink.gif

Being Dredd.

Was Stallone no longer doing a decent job as Dredd when he had the helmet on?

I'm not familiar with the comic book, I vaguely remember the Sly version, but I don't care if Dredd has to have that stupid expression all the time, it did look silly and over-the-top. Hugo Weaving had all his face covered with a mask in V For Vendetta, and it was still a powerful performance. I do like Karl Urban a lot, but in Dredd, I don't know, that was weak. Maybe he was asked to do it, maybe it was in fact faithful to the character, I have no idea, but it still looked lame and amateurish, and it didn't translate well at all on screen. ....YMMV, as per usual wink.gif

SS's Dredd didn't have the mask on all the time...it's an important difference.

+1
It doesn't work in this movie.
Hell, you could have put the helmet on any 2 bit actor and saved a bundle on KU's appearance fee.
It's just a dumb call by the producers to bring in Urban for this role.
