I would also like another Punisher feature film with Thomas Jane. The 2004 version is often derided, but I thought it had just the right blend of action, tragedy and humor. I also appreciate the intelligent music score that went in a direction unexpected for this type of film.

from Thomas Jane IMDB page -

2011, on making The Punisher) You know, I remember the workout regiment and training with the Navy SEALs was intense. That, and somebody forgot to replace the real knife with the prop knife for the scene with Kevin Nash, and I ended up stabbing him in the chest. And, you know, he's about 7'4", and... that was an interesting moment. [Laughs.] I still don't think they've gotten a Punisher movie right. They've made three of 'em now, and he's yet to be done correctly.

Other interesting tidbits -

Was Zack Snyder's first choice for Edward Blake/The Comedian in Watchmen (2009), but he had to turn it down because of scheduling conflicts with Dark Country (2009).

Was very interested in playing the lead in Jonah Hex (2010). He even voiced the character in the animated short DC Showcase: Jonah Hex (2010) (V).

Was offered a chance to reprise the role of Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone (2008), but turned it down.

There was a different vibe in that movie with the intense opening massacre and then the wacky apartment scenes with the geeks and hot chick. I just caught up to it a few months ago but enjoyed it.

Same!

Unfortunately I bought the second one also ( that didn't star Thomas Jane ) and didn't like it. Sold that pretty quick.

The big problem with the 2nd is it simply told the same story.rolleyes.gif

Actually, if you look at all three films to date, going from Lundgren to Jane to Stevenson, the first and third tell stories placed after the Punisher's origin (although with references to events in that origin), while the second was a revised origin story in and of itself. Of the three films, Punisher: War Zone (the Stevenson version) has an origin reference that hews closer to the original comics (i.e. Castle is a Vietnam vet, his family was killed in Central Park, etc.) than the second film ever did.

My personal preference is for the second film, if only because it is an origin story and not some in medias res thing like the others were. The third film gets some marks for being closer to the comics than the others, but loses some points for its excessive violence and overall darker tone.

The third gains some points with me due to the violence. biggrin.gif

I grew up during the "exploitation" era in films. Most movies are mild in comparison nowadays. wink.gif

I liked them all in their own way.
