I didn't see this film in a movie theater. I did a blind buy on BD and have had the disc some four or five months now. I was excited to get it, but have known that it's 3 hrs+, so I put off viewing it for a while. Over the weekend I tried to watch it for the 4th or 5th attempt now, and I simply cannot make it past 30 minutes before turning it off. It's convoluted and boring. There is no hook to hold my interest, and I couldn't see one coming.
Now, generally I am not an impatient movie lover. I mean, one of my favorite films is Lost In Translation, so don't think I'm an explosions must occur every 5 minutes or I'm out of there viewer. I like a slow burn, assuming there is a payoff. For instance, Moneyball is a slow burn, but boy is there a payoff. Atonement is a slow, character driven piece too, with a nice but simple plot, but I absolutely love it and have seen it two or three dozen times.
Also, I can handle extremely complex plots. I loved Inception from the first viewing in the theater. I saw it again in the theater, bought the BD on preorder, and have seen it about 20 times. I still love it.
Cloud Atlas? Man, I cannot remember being so bored and caring so little about anything on screen. The 30 minutes I lasted was one of the longest half hours I've spent in years.
Sorry. It's a dud in my book.
