My choices would be Geddy Lee and Chris Squire in terms of bassists who are at the perfect intersection of serving the song while having amazing technical capabilities. But of course there are a whole other set of bassists who are great in terms of serving the song almost purely.

Chris Squire is more like top ten. Jaco Pastorius and Michael Manring would be top 2

I agree with Jaco Pastorius but I think James Jamerson is up there also.

Besides those mentioned...

Stanley Clarke
Jeff Berlin
Victor Wooten
Marcus Miller
Tony Levin
Adam Nitti
Percy Jones
and more I'm forgetting...

Trying to rank them makes no sense to me.

I was trying to think of the guy from Bruford's name. After Levin, he was one of the first ones that popped into my head (after the most obvious, popular names, like Wooten and Clarke).

And Percy Jones - whoa! What a great choice that I completely forgot about! How in the world he didn't immediately come to mind I don't know.

Yeah, he's excellent in his own right, but I'd still take Geezer Butler over him for Hard Rock. wink.gif

I don't know if you want to classify him as one of the best but he did play with a bunch of rock bands . . . Rudy Sarzo

Jamerson would be towards the top of the 'serves the song' category of bass players. Like Lee or Squire, he could play quite active bass lines that still seem to be very anchored to the song structure. And doing so in the context of the 3 minute pop songs he was doing is quite a feat.
