Good guess! I still feel like this one slipped under the radar, IMO it's quite good.

I really can't stand Zellweger, so it was not appreciated here.

Since we're on a western jag, here's one that might be a bit difficult. Sorry for the poor quality VHS dupe.
Name that movie:

I don't remember seeing it, but I recognize the tall actor, so I will guess The Grey Fox.

Richard Farnsworth. I'm pretty sure you cheated.
OOP almost since it was first released on VHS, and a wonderful movie. Also a marginally true story about an infamous stagecoach and train robber named Bill Miner who was dubbed "The Gentleman Bandit". One of those Zoetrope titles that seems to languish forever in a digital rights black hole.

I don't think you can jump to the conclusion that Bill cheated. The Grey Fox is one of the most celebrated films to ever come out of Canada.

Yeah, let's have a little faith.

I recognized Farnsworth and remember how he worked as a stuntman and extra for years (just saw him as a goon in The Outlaw Josey Wales) until finally breaking out with The Grey Fox. Then he worked quite a bit in larger roles, sometimes starring, as in The Straight Story. If I saw the movie shown...I'm still not remembering it. Some stills, probably. Glimpses on cable?

It made the rounds on cable for years, and VHS/Beta. I think one of the VHS releases was one of those awful EP editions.

A belated happy July 4th to all!

I reviewed this one a couple of years ago: Stars and Stripes Forever (1952)

I don't want to be churlish when classic films become available, but was anyone clamoring for this one? It's a middling bio-pic given a lush Blu-ray image. The studios are hard to understand sometimes.

Apropos of possibly something, when I was a pup and watching NBC's Saturday Night at the Movies-the first venture of the three networks showing older films in prime time, I believe starting around 1961-there were a variety of films I figured ought to have been filmed in color but turned up in B&W. These included The Black Rose, Cheaper by the Dozen, and The Stars and Stripes Forever, and probably a few others.

Fast forward several decades, and these films started appearing in color on local stations. Possibly Fox (and these were films from the Fox catalogue) just discovered that they had first-class prints of these old films that looked good enough to require no restoration, so they just scanned 'em and released 'em.

Just a theory. I agree the Sousa film was no great shakes, other than the superb Alfred Newman treatment of the Sousa marches.

Incorrect, but not a bad guess. Same general period when a number of odd-ball gritty westerns were made.

I'd love to see a North American Blu-ray release for this. If the DVD is any indication, a Hi-Def release would look gorgeous.

That would be terrific.

I'm looking forward to The Homesman, a film he also directs and stars in, plus he wrote the screenplay as well.

I knew it was The [some number] [funerals or burials] of M_____ E_____ but only research revealed the details.

I remember it as a bit grotesque. Much like a Cormac McCarthy story. I don't think he was involved, but Tommy Lee Jones is a big fan.

I had to pull out the DVD to check the spelling, otherwise I'd have been screwed.
