For those who haven't seen them, Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring are two parts of the same story, filmed together.

You don't have to watch French films, but if you do, these should be high in the queue.

That double feature releases on BD next week, from Shout! Factory. Cheap too.

These are fantastic must see films, IMHO. Practically Shakespearian. After the mention of Yves Montand, I had to bring them up.

Uneasy lies the crown on the head of the thread starter who exists only to reward points to others.

I reviewed this back when dinosaurs roamed the earth: The Naked Spur (1953).

I'm fuzzy on the aspect ratios for that actor (no hints from me here) in his costume roles. How about Far From the Madding Crowd?

Indeed. Picture of Alan Bates in From the Madding Crowd (1967).

Starring the lovely Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates. Directed by John Schlesinger, cinematography by Nicolas Roeg. I remember first seeing the 70mm blow-up in the winter of 1967. Beautifully shot, it was quite a sight on the big screen. At the time I was not familiar with the Thomas Hardy novel and I grew increasingly impatient with Christie's Bathsheba character who came across as headstrong and spoiled...and not made easier by 168 minute run-time. The movie flopped at the box office in the U.S. This may have been my first exposure to Stamp and Bates. However, now that I am older and know more about Thomas Hardy I appreciate the story and movie much more.

I've pre-ordered the Blu-ray that is coming out on February 15, 2015 and which seems to be timed with the upcoming release of the new UK version in May 2015.

Yup.
I'm just getting started. On the whole this is a real turkey of a film. Star power and good acting doesn't overcome the silly script.
