I'm okay with robots looking simular to previous movies. But Oblivion totally rips of huge chunks of plot points AND visual details from at least 5 sci-fi movies.

2001
Wall E
Planet of the Apes
Matrix
Blade Runner
Aliens
Independence day
Moon
Total recall
Time Machine

It was getting ridiculous. Almost every single significant scene is copied from another movie

You know that guy from that movie who did that thing and then they drove a car and it was like whoa but the other guy was mad and they had to fight then the girl was in trouble so the guy saved her?

Yeah but that one ripped off the one where hansom bad guy beats the ugly good guy - and gets the girl of course.

But that was a rip off of even earlier one which the innocent bystander gets the girl and the money when the fight between the good and the bad guy was over and both are dead. They just tweaked the ending a little. tongue.giftongue.gif

I guess if you have seen one movie or in this case 10 movies than you have seen them all and you needn't see anymore because it will only be a rehash of something that you have already seen.

Heheh, that actually works for some genres (for me).

All exorcism movies are all the same. Yup. No need to see another one.... ever again.

Exactly, guess most who enjoyed it didn't have this problem...prob due to mostly movie amnesia which is actually good thing.

But there's at least 2 movies that I can add to that list. Terminator Salvation and The Host. But again, Cruise is such a big presence and star that he can over ride most of it or at least make it look like he's doing for the 1st time.

So what you're saying is "Oblivion" is the Carlos Mencia of sci-fi.

I can't speak for others who enjoyed it but for me it was the skill of the director. I did recognize the similarities to other movies (which movie does away without it?) but this one is better crafted than many movies I've seen in recent years. The core theme is carried out skillfully (cinematography & editing). Could it have been better? No movie is perfect, so yes, it could have but there aren't many movies that did better this year.

I agree - I saw lots of elements from some of those movies you list, but I'm curious what element of Blade Runner stuck out to you? I'm a Blade Runner nut and I can't recall what scene was borrowed there.

I'm not sure there is a movie that comparisons couldn't be made. It will usually come down to how well the material is integrated into the story before someone calls foul. I'm surprised that Terminator wasn't mentioned with the scene within the hideout. Pulling ideas from other movies only bothers me if it triggers an earlier movie memory. If the flow is good, that doesn't happen.

How many times have we seen a plot where a stranger arrives on scene, is interested in a female, she is already attached, the attached guy is a jerk, stranger attracts female, female falls for stranger, female becomes disenchanted with stranger, female goes back to jerk, stranger makes amends, female drops jerk again and ends of with stranger. Yes, guilty. I've watched Rom-Coms with my wife.

The same can be constructed of a scif-fi plot, horror plot, who done it.....etc.

You know what, the sad part is that these multiple references to the last 732 sci-fi movies, homages, ripoffs, plagiarisms, you name it, could have been somewhat tolerable if they didn't actually choose the Empire State Building for their little tear-jerker moment. I knew, I knew the Oblivion filmmakers exposed themselves to a handful of nasty lawsuits because of the blatant, inexcusable ripoff of.....Sleepless In Seattle!!!!! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gif At this point I didn't even push the eject button, I threw my whole gear out the window!! (Not to mention Sleepless in Seattle in some strange way ripped off King Kong too)
