first off I know it was filmed in 5k, there are allot of 4k projectors too. what i dont know if its even technoligally possible for the 4k 3d to happen and if it is will it happen. also dont know if the 2d 4k res will happen. I've been searching for this everywhere for a couple weeks and talking on various forums and getting different answers from opinions to what sounds like technical facts for there being a 4k and for there not being a 4k release. some have said that the DCP will only contain a 2k release because the IMB or the server media block(not sure what its called when its on the server) cant handle the decode of size of a 4k 3d master. others have said that PJ has put the time and money, manpower and even extra buildings specifically to do just that. Does anyone have any solid information on this besides theories. if you truly know what your talking about on the extremely modern tech side of things and actually have a professional informed opinion than please post, its just that I've heard allot of guesses and even educated guesses for both sides. Just trying to find the real answer.

I don't know if this is entirely accurate, or if it will answer your question, but here is a video I saw yesterday describing all the formats The Hobbit will be available in.

According to that IMAX HFR is the format to look for if you want 4K 3D.

Nearly ever theater showing 3D is showing it at 2D. Just facts of life.

Just think of all the unhappy customers who paid for 3d and got 2d! The humanity of it all!

this is great thankyou, it seems to be accurate to becuase the only theater in my state that is playing it in imax hfr 3d is using a 4k master, i just spoke with the manager at the theater. Now only if I can find a theater playing a imax hfr 3d 4k with dolby atmos

As I responded in the other thread, digital IMAX is not 4k. It's two 2k projectors converged onto the screen.
