Man, I'm on a roll..chalk up another Sci-Fi/Post apocalyptic action blockbuster for next year.

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on July 12, the film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised:

Hey wouldn't that be interesting if the sequel for this would be them vs the Transformers crew with both Del Toro and Bay sharing the director's chair.

Giant robots fighting giant monsters coming out of the Pacific. This really pushes my nostalgia buttons and takes me back to my childhood. OK, so they're not named Godzilla and MechaGodzilla, but it still looks like a blast to me.

I am cautiously optimistic about Pacific Rim, almost entirely because it is Del Toro's work. Also, I see that the cast contains Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman, both members of Kurt Sutter's Sons of Anarchy stock company. Both Hunnam and Perlman have done great work there and Perlman has done great work a lot of other places. Thus, I'm probably in.

Yeah, I think Perlman's Hellboy performances were among the best of his career. But Perlman does a lot of great work. For example, his performance in Drive as the thug Nino was out of this world.

Perlman always seems to get roles perfectly adapted to his skills and physical presence.

True. If there ever has been an actor who was more of an antithesis of the typical Hollywood actor than Perlman, I don't know who he might have been. Somehow, Perlman manages to get parts in which his hulking physical presence and charisma work for him while his, dare I say it, remarkable ugliness somehow works for him too. No wonder Del Toro has used Perlman so frequently!

More like 70's Japanese animation, Mazinger Z or Great Mazinger.

I actually have high hopes for Jack Reacher, the upcoming Tom Cruise film. Although little Tom Cruise hardly resembles the Jack Reacher of Lee Child's thrillers, who is huge, it has other things going for it. The film was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, whose screenplay for The Usual Suspects won an Oscar. Also, Jack Reacher is a fascinating character and I think one of his stories has a good shot at translating well to film. Finally, most Tom Cruise films turn out to be rather good.

I was actually referring to his "Jack Harper" character in the upcoming Oblivion, since we were on the topic of sci-fi. That trailer looks quite interesting. Jack Reacher is another one of those books I completely missed and know nothing about.
