Looking at the G.G. nominees the first big surprises, for me at least, is in the Lead Actor category:
Richard Gere – ARBITRAGE
John Hawkes – THE SESSIONS

With the SAGs, it would be the nomination of Louis C.K. and the lack of one for the cast nomination for Dexter.

Of course, YMMV....

I'm pretty meh on most of those. I think they (Academy) are out of touch with a lot of things.

Zero Dark Thirty feels very propaganda-ish and is keeping me away.

I've seen Django and it's awesome.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is on tap for tomorrow.

I saw Snow White and can't see why it gets costumes over Lawless. They were superior in Lawless on par with Untouchables wardrobe.

Animation was weak this year. Brave was not very good IMHO. It felt like a Disney movie while Wreck It Ralph felt like a Pixar if that makes sense.

Argo is coming highly recommended by forum members I trust so I suspect it will get seen ASAP.

Anyways, my two cents, FWIW.

The trailers don't feel that way to me.
However, I am not really interested in the Hollywood treatment of this and will stick to the known history.
The bin Laden thing is way WAY too important to trivialize with a frickin' movie.

ZDT might be good but I'm so disenfranchised with all politics right now. The left/right thing is really depressing and both sides are pretty farmed up from my point of view. America Farm Yeah and everything Bin Laden is gone but at what cost? Feels like the USA is the bad guys now and we are so split inside it's pretty bleak but whatever you know? What can you do?

yep some mystifying choices.

the oscars this year should be very interesting.

a ton of great movies from last year.

best picture looks like argo or lincoln.

best director is a big question mark. it could go to david russell if the academy doesn't want to give speilberg another oscar. affleck isn't nominated and
ang lee just won a couple of years ago.

no brainers for best actor and best supporting actress.

best actress should be really interesting as both chastain and lawrence are incredibly deserving. too bad they can't use the golden globe model and give an
oscar to each of them.

best supporting actor is either deniro. jones, or arkin.

there are so many wonderful movies from the past year, i don't see one sweeping the other production and writing awards.

going in i had lincoln as a lock for most of the awards but after gg and sag, not so sure.

You mean, when they gave him the Best Director trophy for that movie, which was the fourth Oscar on his shelf?

Yeah, the Academy must hate Steven Spielberg. They've only nominated him for major awards 15 times.

yeah but he's only got 2 oscars for directing. and they didn't give him best picture for spr after he got best director which
most interpreted as a rather personal snub.

That's more than most. Only William Wyler, Frank Capra, and John Ford have more than that. Not bad company to be following on the list. His seven director nominations and two wins equal David Lean and Fred Zinnemann. I wouldn't say the Academy hated them.

And they're all dead, while SS has probably got another decade or more left in him.

I dunno, it didn't stop Clint Eastwood from trying, and he got his second at 74. Oliver Stone is the same age as SS (and also has two.) I doubt he's giving up.

I don't get the "Academy hates Spielberg" talk. SS has gotten about as much recognition as some of the greatest directors of all time, or even more, compared contemporaries like Ridley Scott, or Scorsese, or Copolla. And 66 is not old for a director, considering some have worked well into their eighties.
