Here's some new death metal ...

I've been tapped out lately. I like to sample all the latest releases in the genres I like, but lately I haven't been very impressed with anything. However, one of the original death metal bands is back and has a new release that's pretty good. It could use a little more variety, but I love the thick sound and great hooks.

(BTW, Cannibal Corpse is coming out with a new album in September. I'm hoping it's as good as Evisceration Plague)

Wow, three weeks without any action from anyone else on this thread. I'm still pretty tapped out, but here's some good new Old School Death Metal.

Death metal with training wheels. What I mean is, it isn't extreme and overwhelming. A good starting point for the casual metal fan to ease into death metal. Just straight-ahead groovy crunch.

Got my Opeth disc today. Awesome album and another great 5.1 mix my Steven Wilson.

I don't care the death metal stuff so I don't have to worry about how this album sounds compared to the rest of their catalog.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Unique combination of different styles. Sophisticated, groovy and heavy. The thinking man's pummeling. Very good album the whole way through. (First song is the worst, so don't give up on it too soon. Skip ahead to 7:17 to see what I mean.)

Here's a cut off their latest album. Not quite as good as the previous, but still worth a listen.

Cuts from each of their two albums. Hard to pinpoint their style. More than a hint of metalcore guitar tone and vocals, but they're closer to groove metal in their power, yet they're wearing death metal t-shirts and they're listed as a death/thrash band. Whatever. Heavy stuff.

Edit: Now that I've had this for a while, I wanted to come back and update my experience. Harmony of Discord is without a doubt the heaviest album I've found this year. An absolute chug-fest.

Apparently there's a mastering problem on the 5.1 mix on the blu-ray:

There is a mastering problem with the 5.1 mix on the the Blu-Ray in this release. The polarity of the left and LFE channels are reversed. I would avoid purchasing until this is corrected.

Just picked up my Opeth set today. I didn't realize there was a problem with the bluray until I just read your post. I guess I will have to fill out the form to get my downloads and get replacement instructions for the bluray.

The music itself seems pretty good so far. The production value is awesome. Certainly very proggy.

Yea, currently, to properly listen to the 5.1 mix you have to swap your LF speaker wire as it's out of phase.

Warner will be shipping replacement Blu-Rays September 30th. I imagine the disk will be available again for purchase around that time.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Besides Opeth, any other hot releases slated for the Fall of 2014?

Here is what I know of so far:

Oct. 14th
-The Acacia Strain - Coma Witch
-Exodus - Blood In, Blood Out
Oct. 21st
-Slipknot - .5: The Gray Chapter
Oct. 27th
-Devin Townsend - Z2
Oct. 28th
-Obituary - Inked in Blood
-Unearth - Watchers of Rule
Oct. 31st
-Cavelera Conspiracy - Pandemonium
Nov. 7th
-Machine Head - Bloodstone & Diamonds

Between October 14th and November 25th, Iron Maiden will be re-releasing EVERYTHING they made in the 80's on Vinyl! More on that here. Holy crap!

On November 4th a band by the name of Soen will be releasing Tellurian. I mention this because the band features former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez. Guess I will have to check this group out.

DVD Releases:
For Lamb of God fans, the documentary 'As The Palaces Burn' will be available on DVD on Oct 14th. But apparently Amazon Prime members can watch it for free now.
Sep 16th
-Anthrax - Chile on Hell DVD

And for the future:
-Slayer in in the studios now working on new album. Rumor has it that Terry Date is going to be the producer of this album. Here is a list of his producer credits. Has me excited!
-Faith No More are working on their first album is 18 years! Expect the album out in April of 2015. EPIC!
-Between the Buried and Me is supposedly working on a new record.
-Fear Factory has apparently signed on with Nuclear Blast and is supposed to enter the studios next month to start recording their new album (unfortunately without Raymond Herrera and Christian Olde Wolbers since that feud is still ongoing ).
-Chuck Billy of Testament said they are writing new material right now and hope to have a new album out in March 2015.
-Marilyn Manson has teased the release of a new album very soon. I like his older 90's stuff and I hope this will be more reminiscent of that as the last couple of albums were not very good IMO.

Some of my sources for this info can be found here, here, and here.

Enjoy

Where the hell is the new Tool album that's supposed to have come out several times the past couple of years? I know they've been working on stuff and Danny Carey is playing a few dates with Primus. But damn, it's been eight years!

I was looking forward to the new Cannibal Corpse, due out tomorrow, but I just heard a new song and I've gotta say their sound now lacks the power of the last couple of albums. Sounds like they're not as detuned. If the songs are good maybe I'll get used to it and accept it for what it is. Evisceration Plague was the high point for me. So now I guess I'm only looking forward to the new Bloodshot Dawn album, which is the only Melodic Death Metal band I care for, and Korzus, whose excellent last album (Discipline of Hate) sounded a lot like Slayer. Hope those two are decent.

So does anybody have any concerts coming up? I have a few coming up that I am really looking forward to.

Sep 30th I am seeing Amon Amarth with Sabaton and Skeletonwitch.

Oct 7th I am going to see Eluveitie with Tyr and Metsatoll.

And while it may not be metal per se but the wife and I are going to see Trans Siberian Orchestra in November.

Just curious as to what others may be getting out to see. I love going to concerts and go to as many as I can. I just retired from the Navy after 20 years and I have missed so much that I am trying to make up for it. Or at least have fun doing so
