The original release, while I haven't heard it I wouldn't touch the remaster with a 10 ft pole since the only thing they could've done was make it worse.

I look at some of the stoner doom or stoner rock bands. For some reason many haven't bought into the loudness war.

Monolord (big subs and big thump drum)
https://monolord.bandcamp.com/track/the-cosmic-silence

Slayer's Reign in Blood Vinyl is pretty solid (CD got compressed into a pancake) and has some worthy material

Pig Destoyer has this in 5.1 surround and it's amazing! Song is long but you could find certain parts to demo.

Cattle Decapitation has been on a roll with good recordings but they are still mastered too loud. Although the play through is pretty cool to watch.

It's a shame that metal is getting compressed too. The best recorded albums still have too much compression. If dynamics were thrown back into it, you could feel the punch of the kick drum and more energy in the vocals. I do hope metal moves towards better recording in the future.

Since you included hard rock - Tool Lateralus

As far as metal, the least compressed are some the the 80's thrash albums, like Metallica's Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets. Trouble is, they are also some of the most thin sounding. All modern metal is very compressed, but IMO most of it sounds better than the old thin stuff.

When I demo speakers my go-to metal song is ...

Images and Words album by Dream Theater.

Fear Factory's Obsolete. I'm sure it's compressed to hell but man it sounds good.

This is from that album, song is Resurrection. Goosebumps every time I hear this section at the end of the song. Unfortunately I couldn't find a clip on youtube that didn't sound terrible...

A Fair Judgement by Opeth. Could be my all time favorite guitar solo and sounds great too.

As far as growling vocals I think the With Oden On Our Side album by Amon Amarth sounds great.

The song Crippled and Broken by Kataklysm:

Anything by Tool is good, my favorite for demo might be the song You Lied from Salival.

Honestly though.... if I'm going to demo a metal song I don't think this one can be beat:

Of course you need to be playing the actual Blu-Ray.

Speaking of Blu-Rays, this concert sounds amazing too. The disc is called Black Symphony by Within Temptation. This is a mellow duet and I love it but they play heavier stuff too. I can't really get into their studio albums but this concert really does it for me.

Obviously none of these will sound great off of youtube.... if I had to pick one it would be Orion.

Yeah I was looking at that site. Ha, looks like the Obsolete album is compressed a lot on the CD but not the cassette.

I think from my list the only albums on CD that aren't compressed are Dream Theater and Opeth.

(Thrash/death)

I featured this band's excellent Furor Incarnatus album here a couple of years ago. It features guitarist Ola Englund, who has the rare ability to combine tasty guitar licks and solos with death/thrash, and also plays for The Haunted. Here's Feared's latest, to be released 6/3. Beware the crack.

With few exceptions, like Demolition Hammer, thrash isn't usually heavy. But this one leans toward the heavier side of thrash. Catchy riffs. Only problem is, I think they only released it, for free, on SoundCloud.

I've been getting into Cattle Decapitation lately. I loved Carcass' Surgical Steel and that kind of opened the door to Grind Metal for me. It definitely takes some getting used to though.

(Thrash metal)

I featured this band's previous album a while ago. Their new album just came out today. Very tight thrash. Vocalist has good range.

(Heavy thrash/groove)

Heavy riffs. I really like their lead guitarist.

I second Carp's take on "Through The Never" blue-ray by Metallica. It has the most dynamic audio I have heard on a disc to this date. it will definitely give your audio set-up a work out.

(Thrash)

Very tight band. Good variety of songs and tempos ... they don't all sound the same like most thrash. Proxy God (6:09) and MetalMorphosis (13:06) are probably my two favorite songs.

Not sure if I posted this artist before.. I may have. I forgot all about them and this song and it popped up today while randoming through music.

Here is the second half of the song. 5:14 seconds of awesomness. It hit's on a lot of my soft spots - sad/somber tone, rythmic chugging riffs, beautiful melodies, etc. It builds up to a probably non-technical but perfect with the song guitar solo a little before 4:00. Sad that the lead singer died, this IMO is talent:

****ing amazing show. I was really surprised that the actual band hung around to sell their wares and talk to the fans. Got a poster signed by almost the whole two bands. I didn't see the drummers.

I was wearing a Be'lakor T and most of NeOb members gave me the thumbs up and or something about it. Glad to see the Aussies breading great talent. Ne Ob was beyond amazing live.

A strong hint of Metallica, a hint of Forbidden's Green and maybe a touch of Black Label Society riffs in certain places.
