20 Seconds Of Nicolas Winding Refn's ONLY GOD FORGIVES. But there are few movies this year as anticipated as ONLY GOD FORGIVES, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling's next collaboration. Their last one, DRIVE, was in my opinion the best film of 2011, so ONLY GOD FORGIVES has a pretty high bar to jump over. Judging from this clip montage, Refn and Gosling may have come close. It's difficult to tell since it's only brief, but it doesn't look like Refn's holding back on the violence any. ONLY GOD FORGIVES opens sometime this year - likely after a premiere at Cannes. Here's the clip:
Thanks zoey. I still might give it a go since the cinematography looked so slick and it's only 1hr 30min. Short eye candy. Also agree that these theatrical releases from D* are really nice for the price. Hope they keep it up.
Phenomenal film. It's easy to see why Hollywood keeps churning out the same braindead crap every year based on the widespread hate for a movie like this.
I'm really curious what you think of this Shawn, being that you show the most interest in this movie. I just have this small hunch that you might be one of those who thought it was one the best of 2013..which is totally fine. Art means diff to each person.
A lot of you will think I'm nuts here but as bad as it was, I was more disappointed with MoS. This was strange and weird, but it was kinda compelling and I respect it was something not the same Hollywood formula crap but too bad it just went over the top with it.
I'm watching this today, I liked Drive but didn't fall for all the hype of OMGAH BEST MOVIE EVER OMGAH. I dug the violence but thought Gosling played a nearly voiceless character like the silent protagonists in FPS games.
As much as I love Drive, and I do love it, I'm not one for artsy films that are trying to be obscure, artsy, enigmatic, and are riddled with references, simply for the sake of all of these things. Having said that, I can forgive these, if a movie is beautiful and moving, and especially if the soundtrack and score are great. I'm looking forward to watching this, but have some fears at the same time.

Digging into this now and it's an odd one for sure. A blend of I Saw the Devil and Eyes Wide Shut more thematically and stylistically than plot. The soundtrack is an ethereal mix of synthesizers like Beyond the Black Rainbow and the movie itself might be as approachable. That's to say it won't be for everybody but I found myself intrigued with the setup and execution of each scene.
Now available from Netflix, though not streaming. Initially watching it was an amazing experience, especially the soundtrack that is unbelievably immersive for a 5.1 DTS HD mix that puts most Dolby Atmos mixes in theaters to shame. Then, there is the commentary by the director. So, saw it and then bought it in BR. Not for the faint of heart and it certainly is not crap, IMHO.
So how about someone explain the scene early on with Mr. Silent watching that whore masturbate, then some arms get chopped, then, well, I don't know WTH that was all about. it makes no sense at all. All I do know is that Kristen Scott Thomas is major MILF.
I return to this long dormant thread to report that I finally saw Only God Forgives via Netflix streaming. A piece about the film by Kevin Lincoln in Grantland encouraged me to see it and I'm glad I did. If any of the rest of you who have not yet seen Only God Forgives and are tempted to see it, be sure to read Lincoln's piece first. It helps, I promise.
Like all of Nicolas Winding Refn's work, the film is visual poetry supported by an evocative soundtrack. Its weakness is that it is excessively vague and its nearly nonstop depiction of murder and maiming require more than a little emotional stamina. Like Lincoln, I ended up liking Only God Forgives. But unlike Lincoln I thought its weaknesses almost overcame its strengths. Nevertheless, I gave Only God Forgives 7 Stars out of 10 because of its visual and aural beauty, its wonderful ensemble cast, and its sheer unusualness. Oh, and yeah, its only 90 minutes long.
I'm fast becoming a fan of the Gosling and Refn combo much like Tarantino and Waltz.
