20 Seconds Of Nicolas Winding Refn's ONLY GOD FORGIVES. But there are few movies this year as anticipated as ONLY GOD FORGIVES, Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling's next collaboration. Their last one, DRIVE, was in my opinion the best film of 2011, so ONLY GOD FORGIVES has a pretty high bar to jump over. Judging from this clip montage, Refn and Gosling may have come close. It's difficult to tell since it's only brief, but it doesn't look like Refn's holding back on the violence any. ONLY GOD FORGIVES opens sometime this year - likely after a premiere at Cannes. Here's the clip:

Whats weird is.. its coming to netflix january?
and in Denmark it premieres in theaters next april..and we can get netflix here. all we have to do is make an American account.. nothing illegal about it..

Netflix and RADiUS-TWC have announced a multi-year output deal in the United States which starts in early 2013. Here's the announcement:

Netflix, Inc. and RADiUS-TWC, the new multi-platform distribution label from The Weinstein Company, announced today a multi-year output deal for a slate of great new films that U.S. Netflix members can watch instantly beginning in early 2013.

Among them are Leslye Hedland's razor sharp comedy "Bachelorette" the raucous Sundance Film Festival sensation about three best girlfriends (Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan) whose night of prenuptial debauchery threatens to ruin the wedding; "Only God Forgives," Nicolas Winding Refn's eagerly awaited follow up to "Drive" starring Ryan Gosling and Kristen Scott Thomas; the Toronto and Telluride satirical hit "Butter" with Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell, Olivia Wilde, Rob Corddry, Ashley Greene, Alicia Silverstone and Hugh Jackman.

HEY! Thanks!

This movie was on my radar, but I had not seen the trailer. Or the.... traillertte? Jings, that was short and not particularly compelling.

If you haven't seen Vahalla Rising, it's on Netflix. Very much a divider-of-people, but I liked it.

In so many ways, SO much like Drive in style and theme.

Then I found out that Winding Refn didn't write Drive. The director dropped out and somebody said, "Hey, you know what this movie reminds me of? Vahalla Rising. See if you can get that director to take over."

Here's hopin' Only God Forgives doesn't suck.

Just keep talkin'. I'll let you know when you're right.

Think back for a min, did everyone including yourself thought the same thing when you saw the trailer for Drive? I know I did. But it's still possible that it could stink but I think it's very unlikely. RG and Refn have built a great relationship and teamwork and this won't be that last time they'll work together. I can see them as another tandem like Scorcese/De Niro.

In select theaters and on demand this Friday 7/19. Drive 2 it is not and I'm fine with that.

Because of the high regard I developed for both Refn and Gosling as a result of their collaboration on Drive I'll probably see Only God Forgives in the theater. I confess, though, that my expectations are extremely low. IMDb voters have been underwhelmed, 6.4/10, and a majority of the critics who reviewed it didn't like it. That said, I didn't like Drive when I first saw it but it grew on me to the extent that I finally ended up buying the BD. Maybe lightning will strike again, I hope so.

Even people who thought Drive was the most brilliant thing ever are calling this borderline unwatchable.

Of course, I thought Drive was borderline unwatchable, so maybe I'll like this one. smile.gif

LOL.

Bill Maher ruined that whole thing.
I was going to get the wife a Snuggie for those cold Oregon winter nights as an X-mas gift awhile back, but she saw the skit on his show and that was the end of that.
No amount of logic could change her opposition....biggrin.gif

Well, that's a good thing because those Snuggies are nasty. About 8ozs for the whole thing and feels like a Walmart reject doggie blanket.

I bought one for my daughter, wish I didn't.

BTW I just crossed 1K posts and all I got was a warm can of Natty Light. Kind of the Made in USA equivalent of a Snuggie.

If it's good enough for dogs, it's good enough for Ms. SOW.

Ryan Gosling is a great actor when he's not starring in roles created by that Sparks character. I heard this was the same director as a Drive, which was outstanding. I'll have to check it out for sure. All of the clips look awesome, but gives me a sort of Lynch vibe...with better acting involved.

One of the theatrical reviewers for my site just submitted his review, which contained this line: "Gosling literally only has a dozen lines in the film, and spends the rest of the time staring at the camera."

In other words, exactly like Drive.

Pass. frown.gif

Bizarre, strange, vapid....are the words that comes to mind when I played "movie roulette" on Directv OnDemand tonight and I lost big time. But it's cool now knowing that D* will have movies before or playing at the same time in the theaters...I do like that aspect very much. $7 for 2 day continues non-stop viewing in 1080p. If this continues with more future titles I'm in.

Ok back to OGF. What you see in the trailers, is what you see the entire movie. People walking around and behaving like they live in a vacuum world or deaf mute. It's a kind of thing that a little may go a long way cool or artsy in small doses but when it's done like this for the entire movie it's pretty bongo nuts. While watching this I kept thinking this movie will be great for deaf audiences, they will love the demonstrative or none from the characters.

People who were annoyed even for a little bit with Drive's quirkiness and coolness will have NO tolerance for this at all whatsoever. The 1st 20 min or so I was really pissed what a turkey this movie is and that the director is clearly just experimenting with his art and resting on the laurels of Drive's success knowing he could afford this bomb..if it turns out to be that way. But as I kept watching they were some funny moments, at least to me with Ryan's mom BIATCH character played by K Thomas. She played it to max bitch. And the bad guy police chief was like some Asian Terminator you DO NOT want to mess with as Ryan found out the hard way.

The premise/plot of this movie to me is very interesting and engaging, even more so than Drive but the way it was executed in such a insipid manner it's really hard to like it or find any entertainment out of it unless you're some film student or someone in the industry who is really into indie/artsy films. But because it is so artsy, there will be ppl who will love this as you'll find on IMDB boards a thread for best movie of the year so go figure, there's something in it for everyone I suppose.

+1

Thanks zoey. I still might give it a go since the cinematography looked so slick and it's only 1hr 30min. Short eye candy. Also agree that these theatrical releases from D* are really nice for the price. Hope they keep it up.

Phenomenal film. It's easy to see why Hollywood keeps churning out the same braindead crap every year based on the widespread hate for a movie like this.

I'm really curious what you think of this Shawn, being that you show the most interest in this movie. I just have this small hunch that you might be one of those who thought it was one the best of 2013..which is totally fine. Art means diff to each person.

A lot of you will think I'm nuts here but as bad as it was, I was more disappointed with MoS. This was strange and weird, but it was kinda compelling and I respect it was something not the same Hollywood formula crap but too bad it just went over the top with it.
