Edelweiss was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein specifically for The Sound of Music. It is not, as is commonly thought, an old Austrian folk song.

But, it could have been based on a WWII German marching song....

Well, yeah, but I thought the point was to name songs that were not originally specifically written for the movie, but were used in the movie and have been become Identified with that particular movie/scene (one of the best examples being Old Time Rock & Roll in Risky Business).

I think anything Sound of Music would be a stretch for many here smile.gif I barely remember it (altho I remember going to see it with my little brother while visiting the grandparents in Reno when it came out)....certainly not high up on my list in any case.

Yeah, naming a song from a musical is like stating a tautology. Of course everyone associates the song with the (film of the) musical because the song was specifically written for the musical and is rarely performed outside of the musical.

There are some exceptions, of course, like the musicals Rock of Ages and Moulin Rouge that used pop songs.

And speaking of Baz Luhrmann films, I now associate Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps with Strictly Ballroom due to the great scene it's used in in that film.

OK, how about this one:
"De Camptown Races."

The song was written in 1850, so pretty sure it wasn't written for the movie scene I have in mind.

Just saw this thread and you guys have done a great job and hit a lot of the movies that have music associated with them. I wanted to add just a couple.

Beethoven's 9th and Ode to Joy: A Clockwork Orange
Chariots of Fire, IMHO, has one of the most associated iconic musical score written for the movie (same name: Chariots of Fire by Vangelis)
-- not that I like either the movie or the music but the association is branded into my soul.
The Godfather also has iconic music written for it: Speak Softly Love
Don't know if anyone has mentioned As Time Goes By for Casablanca
Star Wars has that omnipresent Darth Vader theme that is used in sports arenas
I Will Always Love You in The Bodyguard
Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing
Maniac from Flashdance
The Crying Game from The Crying Game
Stayin Alive from Saturday Night Fever
Ghostbusters from Ghostbusters

Its a bit obvious when some of the songs were named for the movie or the movie was named for a song.

"Nowadays, you can just click a button and buy a book, meet your spouse or ruin someone's life. Sometimes those last two are the same thing." John Oliver.

The OP started the thread with: I don't think I'm the only one but do you have any songs/music that when you hear it you instantly think about a movie (don't mean movie themes etc.) ?

Good call on Clockwork Orange, although Singin' in the Rain as previously mentioned is my major connection, Ludwig Van a strong second smile.gif
