I just don't get U.S. audiences sometimes smile.gif...its a movie that begins a little slow the first 30-45 minutes, then turns into one of the MOST entertaining films I've seen so far this year other than Die Hard and Bullet to the Head.

28 million...28 million smile.gif...that's it for the first weekend. 200M budget...its gonna bomb here smile.gif! I see it doing well enough overseas to recoup the budget. But the movie I saw didn't deserve to tank here.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Slow start as they develop Jack and the princess. HOWEVER smile.gif...I'm gonna say 40 minutes in they climb the bean stalk, reach the top, and all hell breaks loose biggrin.gif!

The star of the film is the SECOND HEAD biggrin.gif!! One of the giants, the "general" has two heads. The main head is the serious one, and the second head is a little crazy and...biggrin.gif...makes these hilarious expressions on its face that will have you laughing throughout the movie!

The group from the Kingdom escape the giants, Jack saves the princess. The giants are not defeated, and they tease like they're gonna do a HOBBIT style robbery and roll the credits? Um no smile.gif.

As soon as Jack gets his reward from the king for saving his daughter, and "walks off into the sunset" they GO BACK to the giants atop the tree. It becomes quite apparent that this movie ain't done, and there will be no Hobbit style robbery biggrin.gif.

What follows next is CHAOTIC invasion of the castle by the giants that's worth seeing the film alone biggrin.gif! The battle lasts a good 20-25 minutes and involves a drawbridge tug of war battle, trees being hurled, arrows launched, you name it!

Giants are strong enough to hurl trees but aren't powerful enough beat average humans in a tug of war?

But anyway...28 million is ridiculous, it deserves to make it up overseas for a sequel.

Dating myself here, but the original JACK THE GIANT KILLER was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. So I'm kinda irked that they changed the title at the last moment.

US audiences are rejecting 80's machismo these days, but yeah, they were entertaining smile.gif! Oscar contenders, no...

This is fun and entertaining, but it's also a CGI-fest. They should've used actors to portray the giants, saving a bundle in the process; they'll never make their bank back. The CGI in King Kong ('05) is actually more realistic looking.

"I knew you'd say that"...*BLAM!*

Went on a date yesterday and saw this movie (3D version). Both of us thought it was very enjoyable and not a waste of money. I'll more than likely rent the Blu ray with it's out just to give my home theater a bit of bass/LFE workout.

Its a shame because this is one of the few films I would recommend to go to the theater and see. They could have ended it right there with the princess saved! With a Hobbit style robbery! Villain waving goodbye, "to be continued" biggrin.gif. They teased that...but to then continue with a nicely done 20-25 minute chaotic castle siege really gave the movie a payoff! If this can't make any money, what will smile.gif? I'm really starting to think its an economy issue, and there just insnt as much disposable income out there.

I saw the trailers of this movie and thought it looked pretty pointless, but last weekend, my daughter begged me to go see it and I ended up enjoying it. At the end of the movie, there was a small aplause by movie goers, which is rare. Definately rent this when it comes out.

Took the family to this (2D version) on a whim tonight. Gotta say, I wasn't impressed. I usually love this type of movie. Jack seemed miscast to me. Wouldn't have minded if a giant ate him. I'll give it another chance when it comes out on blu.

Even by watching the trailers I thought there was way too much CGI in this, making these giant characters completely unbelievable. Kinda spoils the fun... I'm not even sure I'll rent it.

If you are judging this movie by the trailers, you won't go see it. I had your exact opinion of the trailers.
Had my seven year old daughter not coaxed me into seeing it, I never would have went. In fact, I would have not taken the time to watch the Blu Ray...!
It was a good movie. In fact, when it was over, many people clapped at the end of the movie. I can't remember when I have heard people clap at the end of a movie...
I recommend it...

Talk about a good marketing campaign wink.gif ...well judging by your comments, I guess I'll rent it after all. But I'm pretty sure it's not something I'll want to own. Come to think of it, there is one thing interesting in the trailer..Stanley Tucci! smile.gif

I would recommend renting before buying. I thought it was entertaining. Definitely rent.

I remember seeing the original in the 80s, which was my first time seeing it since it was in the theater. I was shocked at how bad it was. I thought, "this was a fond childhood memory??"

Oh damn...forgot about that 80s edition. That wasn't quite the original...I mean, it was, but they changed it. Somebody decide to really dumb it down and added songs!...terrible songs, and altered dialog! I remember seeing it and was stunned at the changes made to the movie...abysmal! The original, unaltered, childhood-memory version can be seen on Netflix.

I wasn't talking about an "80s edition". I was talking about seeing the original film from the 60s sometime in the 80s.

It was awful.

This was a pleasant surprise.

Other than one F-bomb, this is close to a pg-13 as one can get these days. This is great entertainment for the family. PQ and AQ are superb. Don't miss it if you enjoy fairy tales. I did not even realize Bill Nighy was in this one.

Hope Hansel and Gretel could come close to this one tonight.
