Just finished it up. Solid flick. Not perfect, but what is? The reported hammering home of the message was more of a nudge. It's no worse than any of a million other movies with a message. The current social climate requires you to pick a side and pretty much be damned whatever you do because you'll still be wrong. I think it used a familiar modern parlance and held a mirror to current events that might have struck a chord with many.

My biggest issue was Foster. She probably could've been removed entirely and the movie would be better. There was plenty of good guy bad guy with Damon and Copley and I saw a cleaner way to get from point A to B with no Foster.

All in all if you liked District 9 you should enjoy this. Excellent effects and weaponry are also on display. I feel they are equal but like many would have liked to see it surpass it. Maybe next time Neill can slow it down a bit. I was really surprised by Copley. He appears to have a good range in his work and there wasn't enough of him here. I can't say much about Damon. He stuck out like a sore thumb for obvious reasons. As a scifi/fantasy fan this can stay on the keeper pile.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
As for removing Foster, I'd do the story similar to this:
Microwaved Damon seeks Spider to get to Elysium, hit goes out on suit BUT Damon and Spider make him write that code, suit in distress gets Kruger called in to save suit (previously fired for shooting down civilians), Kruger is like I CAN USE THIS TO GET ELYSIUM, Damon is like OH HELL NO, fight, Damon escapes, Kruger chases, Damon goes to see Dr., etc, etc...No Foster more crazy arse Kruger

Also might ditch Damon for a more appropriately flavored actor

It’s a sickness that has permeated our society. You can see an example being played out in the - At the Premier of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug thread.

I dumped this from my queue this week after watching the trailer. It didn’t do much for me and looks similar to so many other futuristic movies. That, and I didn’t want to deal with my wife being upset about the political overtone. She is the type that would say it was a hammer over the head message. I can live without that.

I can respect that. I enjoyed Oblivion, Pacific Rim, Into Darkness more myself. The message in Pacific Rim was pretty hammer over the head too but was still fun.

Honestly (IMO) the political message was pretty much de-fanged by the over the top caricatures of the "downtrodden" and the "evil rich". Add in no backstory for this condition and the political message was neutralized.

It's a fun enough movie I guess, but I have to disagree with Darth, it was no District 9.

Say wha?!? You mean you would remove the lead bad guy / master mind Sith Lord from Star Wars and just keep its henchman Darth Vader?

Couldn't agree more. As I have said here before, I didn't see much of a currently relevant political message in the film, which was probably because it was so loud and dumb. It was so filled with deliciously bad guys, and a gal, I couldn't take it seriously enough to be either bothered or convinced by its heavy-handed theme.

Like you, I thought it was "fun enough" but certainly not in a class with Blomkamp's District 9.

The "political message" in the movie I didn't really find very political.

We humans, throughout history, have always known the rich and powerful live differently and do so on the backs of the non-rich.
With the possible exception of the ignorant, this isn't news to anyone.

I mean in terms of tone more than anything. Like you know what you're in for style wise, if that makes sense?

Nah. I never watched Star Wars for the Emperor. Not once ever.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
I'm just saying you could take away the President and Foster and all that political machinating (what if an illegal landed in your yard?!) and let all of the reasons to run Elysium fall on Kruger and Damon. You'd end up with more of what I like about the movie. A little crawl at the beginning could have setup things nicely

I'll see your Tom Cruise and raise you PAUL RUDD! smile.gif Can you even imagine how awesome Oblivion would have been with all those Paul's running around!

Just finished this myself. I was thinking I might purchase (in spite of plot-holes and weak script), but what happens to the "villain" in the hospital killed the deal...

Fail

Yep. F. Scott Fitzgerald said it best: "Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me."

Great production and visuals, but total horse$h1t of a storyline and premise. The term "over the top caricatures" used in an earlier post pretty much nails this movie. The caricatures are so cliche and narrow-minded, it's practically insulting to the viewer. It's sort of like overt racism w/o the skin color.

It's not so much a "political message" rather customized styling to be the perfect jerk-fest to an audience of particular political ideology. That's how I would describe it.

Just finished it. I won't rehash what's been said already. I'll just say that it wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting, but there seems to be some useful film on the cutting room floor and some odd directorial choices. This could have been a great movie. I'll cut Blomkamp a break since I think D9 is freaking fantastic..…but I thought The Sixth Sense was fantastic too, and you see how Sham a lama Dingdong turned out with his subsequent films after a great first effort.

I would also put it in the 'not a complete waste of time' category, but it's so straight out of the Standard Hollywood Script school. All the standard buttons pushed in the standard order, and all the standard characters in the standard poses. It struggles to rise above the "CGI-Fest with the occasional accidental bursts of acting or character development" sort of movie that seems almost inevitable for these types of movies these days.

I'd blame Damon for this. An unknown might've made all the difference. Someone more like the Spider fellow.

I could buy that, but then I think...wonder how many awards and/or nominations will get showered on this one by the Hollywood elite?... I think that will pose an interesting context to your use of the term "anyone". wink.gif Would also be interesting to get the Hispanic viewpoint on this one...

What I really came back to this topic today about was to say that the more I think about it (plus the vid reviews posted earlier by zoey67), this movie really does seem like a full-on and genuine propaganda piece, cleverly (or not so cleverly) skinned as a "sci-fi" film, that was snuck in along with the other regular blockbuster films of the year. I guess I'm saying there is a "whiff" about this one that is just not right, despite it being legitimized by top-shelf production value and actor roles.
