I saw this one again in a streaming version from amazon.com. I have not changed any of the opinions I expressed earlier in the thread. One difference I noted in the streaming version: the heavily accented, virtually unintelligible dialog from Sharlto Copley (South African English) are now subtitled, as are the French lines from Jodie Foster. Now you can understand what "Kruger" is saying - a distinct improvement.

really? well that could be a reason to watch it a second time then! Most of the time I couldnt understand what he was saying, kinda frustrating tbh... On another note, I saw him in Oldboy as well months later, and he was terrific (and intelligible!)

I didn't have too much trouble understanding him.

Keep in mind....they had to change the title of the film "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" to "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" because they didn't want Americans to think it was some documentary on Einstein or something. They would probably subtitle Monty Python or something.

Mind you, I'm surprised they even used subtitles. "I don't wanna have to READ when I watch a movie!! Jeez!!"

English being not my first language (I'm french), I may be fluent (almost! wink.gif ), but I admit some accents are hard to understand, at least for me. Even in District 9 Copley was hard to follow sometimes.

Your command of THE ENGLISH (shoutout to Stephen Colbert) language is excellent and far better than most native speakers.

Your grammar and sentence structure are as good and mostly better than most native speakers.

Ms. Oink, although born here, has duo citizenship and comes from a long line of Canucks.

I have visited B.C. many times and got to know the culture and speech.

BTW, I can do a mean imitation of Doug and Bob McKenzie.....eh.wink.gif

Doug McKenzie: I am your father, Luke. Give in to the dark side of the force, you knob.
Bob McKenzie: He saw Jedi 17 times, eh.

Bob McKenzie: This movie was shot in 3B - three beers - and it looks good, eh?

True confessions: I use subtitles on any show that has a lot of English or other Commonwealth accents in play, although English is my one and only language and my hearing is still excellent. The hassle of subtitles means nothing when compared to losing the thrust of the story because I can't understand what the hell is being said. The decision is made even easier when other foreign accents are involved.

I think this not being able to understand British, South African, Australian etc accents thing is a purely American phenomena. I don't know anyone with that problem here in Canada. But then, you Americans think we Canadians say "aboot" instead of "about". No one else does.

The reason isn't mysterious....only Americans have the right to critique other nation's use of the language.tongue.gif

There are some areas of America where THE ENGLISH (Colbert again) language has been replaced with gibberish and nasal grunting.
