I doubt anyone thinks The Mask character would work in this movie. To me, it looks like he's playing a man who had lost his mind, but very subtly. Looks to be a very solid performance.

Yes, I was agreeing with you. I should have made that clearer.

Movie was released this past weekend - has anyone seen this? Most the reviews are pretty bad. Basically, a rehash of the first movie in the graphic violence department, but without any of its charm.

Don't let "reviewers" influence your opinion....go see it yourself.

I saw it. It was nowhere near as good as the first one. As a matter of fact, they seemed loosely linked together, in terms of quality and spirit. It wasn't a bad movie at all, but it seemed to lack polish and direction. It was a bit over the top, which I don't mind, but it seemed as though it was over the top to make up for quality elsewhere. Or, it being so over the top stood out so much, because of lack of quality elsewhere. I would still say go see it for yourself since I'm harder on movies than most, and I can see how many people would really like this movie. Not that I didn't like it, because I did. But it was a disappointment when viewed next to the first movie.

I LOVE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems to me it would have been fated to be a disappointment, given what the first one was. It's maybe Hollywood's greatest intellectual limitation, to fail to remember how seldom a really big lightning strike happens twice in the same place. And the first one was just a really big lighting strike, which was so impactful because it was so unique. Another one, by definition, would be hard pressed to be unique.

Financially, the first movie was a pretty small lightning strike. It did only mediocre business at the box office, but sold fairly well on disc. Universal hoped that some of the audience that discovered it on video would pay to see the sequel theatrically. No such luck, apparently.

This ploy didn't work for Universal when they picked up Serenity or Hellboy from other studios either. I doubt it will happen again.

I wasn't speaking in terms of financial success, but just the things that made it so good.

I thought it was good and worth watching, but it was no Godfather 2 to Godfather 1.

Agreed.

This is more of an action movie than anything else.
Other than sharing some of the same characters from K-A1, it has little of the flavor of the 1st film.
What made K-A1 special was the black humor, not much of that in this sequel.

The wife and I were all set to see this. We LOVED the first one but I am getting 2nd thoughts and thinking of doing something else if this is not an extension of the first movie. I like action, but it was the "flavor" of the first film that she liked if I get your gist. We don't get a chance to do much sans kids so may just wait for the blu on this one.

FWIW, I wish I had waited for the BD.....this is NOT must-see-in-theater material IMO.

I have been ambivalent about it too. Based on what I have read, passing it up would not be a big loss.

I Gave it a chance and the only thing good about this movie was the blonde chick.

This was best Ive ever seen from Jim Carry.I cant stand him and he was totally unrecognizable in the film and actually stayed away from his usual obnoxious crap.

My wife and I LOVED the first one and I went in with very low expectations. I was waiting for it to really suck and actually ended up enjoying a lot more than other recent movies.

Certainly, it did not have the charm of the first one. I will never forget each scene as tiny Chloe worked her way through the seven worst words. The way her fight scenes were staged, and set to some wacky, rockin music, what a good time! This did not really have that but the other thing I enjoyed about the first movie was consequences and this moving made a point to keep that theme alive. Jim Carrey was good in this, did not replace Nic Cage but still good.
