Quite possibly the greatest country act of the late 20th century. Trivia: He's had more charted singles than any act in any format. Doing a special radio show tomorrow morning.

Yes and no. Back when he did this song, his immortal words were, "Nobody will buy that morbid son of a bitch." Now, you have to remember George was pretty much at the bottom of the barrel with his personal life. Billy Sherrill, who produced the song, had to piece together several sessions to get the song to fit just right. In some instances, Mr. Jones confused the lyrics with "Help Me Make It Trough The Night" - a song written by Kris Kristofferson and a hit for Sammi Smith. After the song received so many accolades, George quickly changed his mind about the song.

Bit of irony: the song was written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman - the same two who wrote "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" for George's ex-wife Tammy Wynette.

Wow, he made it this far? Met him around 20 years ago on his way to a gig in Florida.
He pulled off the highway to have a few beverages. I and a friend just happened to be there.
He was so wired from a large bag of power, his driver needed to calm him down.
90 minutes and a few funny stories later they were back on the road. One of those strange
moments in life.

Heh. I played blackjack with him in a casino by chance several years ago. He didn't say much at the table, but his wife was a riot. I don't remember how the subject came up, but I was telling my friend about something funny Redd Foxx said, and she mentioned that they were friends of his, and how much they loved and missed him.

RIP, George.
