Finally saw it on BD. Nichols may be making the most finely crafted American films today. So much under the surface, but there to see, and it even resolves - for instance, the boy's reaction to the girl smiling at him at the end Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
as opposed to the obvious theme of his becoming another Mudd

Also, if you're sensitive to photography, the exposure control was spectacular. There were more shots that would survive as great stills than I think I've ever seen. Simply beautiful to look at.

Eve: I thought I was through getting involved with men who were trouble. Falling in love on a look. I can't look at you.

Mickey: You have perfection about you. Your eyes have music. Your heart's the best part of your body. And when you move, every man, woman and child is forced to watch.

Malick doesn't count tongue.gif His visuals are always nice of course, but not usually "intimate" if that's the right word. I love subtle shadow detail, colors emerging from the dusk, and Mudd is just full of that stuff. I also like the casual visuals in Mudd, just a porch at night and it's all of a sudden art.

But yeah, I'm a sucker for Malick - have to wait for the right time though ...

FWIW, I think his latest film is his best yet.
I was quite moved by it.

I’m looking forward to Jeff Nichols next movie – Midnight Special.

A father and son go on the run after the dad learns his child possesses special powers.

A nice cast of characters. Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, and of course, Michael Shannon.

I recently did a back-to-back starting with Shotgun Stories and ending with Mud. Nice weekend. Nichols gets better and better as he goes, and he is only 34.

BTW, I gave The Tree of Life a full look about a month ago and survived. Getting through that first 45 minutes is the difficult part. In order to wake up and finish the movie, I think an intermission is required after that sequence. I think it would be better appreciated. The rest was okay, but nothing I have any desire to see again. FYI, Ty Sheridan, Ellis in Mud, played Steve in TTOL. Phenomenal performance by both kids in Mud.

I didn't know that, thanks. It will help me get into the right mood to see it, so I can move on to To The Wonder smile.gif Have to do Malick in order you know ...

Just watched this movie and loved it. Contrary to some of the earlier comments about the slow reveal, I didn't feel that way at all. It was important to have the boys - and the audience - develop a relationship with Mud and an idea about who he was before the central plotline was revealed. It unfolded at exactly the pace I thought it should. And just to echo some other comments, every actor in this film was terrific from the 2 boys to MM, who has developed into one today's great actors, IMO. I can't remember the last time I saw him give a weak performance. Next up: Killer Joe.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Just learned that Killer Joe is to be shown on HBO next Monday evening. Because I am moving this week (To Tulsa, not Texas, oink. smile.gif) I won't be able to set it up to record until I get set up with Cox Tulsa but that will be done late this week. Looking forward to seeing it!

KJ is a very good modern noir.
Juno Temple is sensational.

Looking forward to recording Killer Joe on Saturday after I get settled in my new house. Of course, that depends on whether Cox Tulsa performs as promised in getting my CableCARDs installed and configured in my TiVos. Previous experience has taught me that whether they do or not is an imponderable. smile.gif

Mud is a "Masterpiece" period! as you can tell I really loved and is most likely the best movie I've seen this year, Take Shelter is just as well done and will have to veiw the third by this director, this guy ( or whoever's in charge of casting) has a real talent for casting if the first two movies are of any indication. And don't get me started on the soundtrack and PQ eek.gif just wow! wink.gif

KJ is sitting on our DVR now, waiting on an opportunity to view. Was going to Netflix the disk but it showed up on HBO first.

Make sure you have a bucket of chicken legs when you watch KJ. You'll feel like you are a part of the movie. smile.gif

Just saw Mud the other day, thought it was a very good movie. I had to do a double take on Reese Witherspoon, she was hard to recognize (a good thing). I'd seen Killer Joe before, that was quite good, too. Might even do a rewatch of that.

I got a chance to watch MUD last night, fantastic!! Loved every minute of it. The 2 boys Ellis and his mate did an amazing job. Actually Ellis mate, with his shaven head, on the boat heading to the island at one stage looked like River Phoneix from Stand by me. Matthew McConaughey is definitely up there with the best of them as an actor will be adding to my collection.

I think that kid just had a brief episode arc on one of the small screen's best shows, 'Justified'. He's a keeper.

Had failed to report that I finally worked up at the library and got the Mud BD about 10 days ago. I liked it even better the second time than I had when I saw it in the theater. The film's ensemble cast was as talented as you can get. There wasn't a weak link in it and some of the performances were stunning. As Franin observed, both the boys and McConaughey were simply wonderful.
