I think I'd go with Comfortably Numb... There's something about Dave Gilmour's style that always gets me. Shine On You Crazy Diamond will remain one of my favorite songs...

But there are so many great solos... Kirk Hammett made amazing things throughout the years, and Van Halen of course...... yeah yeah, Hendrix, but I've already said I'm not a fan! tongue.gif ...oh and Mark Knopfler on Sultans Of Swing... It's nearly impossible to name only one imo.

It would be hard to pick just one from only one artist, but for me it would have to be a Jerry Garcia solo since he is my favorite overall guitar player. As far as which solo exactly.......that would be even harder considering the enormous library of studio and live solos of his that have blown me away over the years. I need to really mull this over some more I think. tongue.gif

My favorite album Jerry solo would be the 2 solos in Eyes from Wake of the Flood. So crisp.

1:30 and 3:00 in the vid.

Great call on Eyes!

Some great Eyes of the World solos over the years (73-74 Eyes jams are SO good), but one that immediately comes to mind is 3-29-90 with Branford on sax which is the version on Without A Net. These two guys are feeding off each other so hard in this version and both throw out some amazing solos. Jerry's solo before the third and final verse is absolutely gorgeous when he throws on that pipe organ/flute type effect mid solo. cool.gif

I love Hendrix, but I stand by my previous choice of musician. This is a highly subjective topic though so I certainly respect everyone's opinion and obviously there is certainly no single right answer.

It is kind of meaningless exercise to try to point out the best solo.

I would go for things like Jimi Hendrix in very much of his record and live works.

Same for David Gilmour.
"Comfortably Numb" has won numerous such "best guitar solo" votes in magazines true the years.
To that I would add the live version from Pulse as the best version.
I would also add the Pink Floyd/David Gilmour song "Sorrow".

Prince is absolutely not forgotten where his extended solos in live shows are even more fantastic than the solos on his records.

In that way we could go on and on.

One of the earlier famous guitar solos (from when famous guitar solos wasn't really invented yet) was Eric Clapton's solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". This was a time when Clapton had started to become a "guitar god". He has supported George Harrison live on that song many times.

So let's rather dig up a curiosity; George Harrison's last live concert in Royal Albert Hall on 6th April 1992, where Gary Moore does the guitar solo honour on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and takes it over the top.

Like I mentioned Coolscan its a very subjective topic, but its fun to read opinions. There is no way we would all ever agree on just one artist or solo for that matter. tongue.gif

Not everyone's cup of tea but I'm posting this video anyway (in case there are few Dan fans lurking). This guy nails every well-known Steely Dan solo. What makes this so impressive to me is the fact that these solos are played by a half dozen different guitarists, some of which who were the most sought after studio musicians of their day. Embedding is disabled on this vid but you can follow the link to youtube, if you're interested.

Nice try sir but neither of those can equal the one and only "Eruption" from Eddie Van Halen.
