I didn't like 300 like most here, I thought it had zero story and very little character development. It seemed like the movie was all about beating us over and over with the "we are spartan" senseless which got to be annoying and boring. But it's ironic that now that I'm a fan of Snyder after the most amazing Watchmen I would have loved for him to direct this one and see how he would have done with this since then. Would have been great and don't know why he's not doing it.

I enjoyed 300 and am awfully curious about this one but.....I'm very concerned about how much this trailer has shown and I'm usually not worried about such things. 300 was so stylized that it's effects just get old beyond that particular movie. If it's more of the same here I fear it's old if not distracting fast. I'm hoping for strong character development on this one.

I think this one has a chance. The cast is impressive. I have really liked Sullivan Stapleton's performances in Strike Back on Cinemax and we know what Heady and Green can do, not to mention how they look. smile.gif

Besides the top 2 on IMDB list...Lena Headley and Eva Green I have no idea who are the others from the cast. IDK gwsat, this movie to me shouts "straight to HBO" . And from the trailers it looks just a bit too animated, cartoonish, and way too much slow mo

You have a point. Although I have really liked Sullivan Stapleton in Strike Back he is hardly a household and with the exception of Headey and Green the rest of the cast is beyond obscure. Still, I remain intrigued.

The thing about 300 is that it concerned one battle that unfolded over just a couple of days. Not much chance for character development when half the movie is devoting to taking names. This one (from what I can tell) is spread out across two historical naval battles (one that happened at the same time as the events of 300, the other later in the month) with a much bigger number of historical figures involved. You could follow characters for a good while and get to know them, or they could just get lost in the crowd. It could go either way.

Don't believe everything on the Interwebz! A duck's quack DOES echo!

The first one epitomized what I liked about Zach Snyders's early movies. No compromise towards hitting mass appeal. Hard R action, and very much a guy flic.

Artemisium and Salamis.  If you're interested in the general subject, Peter Greene's The Greco-Persian Wars is an excellent and accessible read.

The Gates of fire is another great book that really focuses on the "300" aspect of the battle.

Reading the synopsizes at Amazon, these books have more than a little fiction in 'em.confused.gif

Oink, Mike's recommendation is a novel, so fiction is the name of the game.

Dunno where you got this idea about Green's work, and none other than Donald Kagan has praised his scholarship.  Did some random, anonymous Amazon "critic" disagree?  Anyhow, back to the movie........

Yea, it's just a novel about what happened. But the writing is fantastic and you really do feel like you are there as it unfolded.

Agreed. I eat live squirrels and punch kittens while I watch it.

The trailer that played before Smaug just made me cringe. I have zero expectations for this one, other than it being a revenue grabbing sequel. Hopefully I'm wrong, but it looks so overblown, contrived, and just plain goofy that it will take some amazing reviews to get me to want see it. This stupid slo-mo-action scene-drama-infusion thing has gotten so old now.

Saw this last night.......

Not as good as the first one. From memory, I'd say it had about as much action, although the action wasn't as good, and felt a little repetitive. This was the story of the before and after the original 300 fought at the Hot Gates, and as such, there was far too little actual Spartan combat. However, it wasn't all bad. The combat that was there, was good, and was reminiscent of the Spartans, but they were no Spartans.

If you were looking for character development.........buy Gosford Park. This tried, but failed in that dept. There was a lot of blood development though......biggrin.gif There was seriously a TON of blood. A lot more than in the original! That wasn't a bad thing, but it wasn't a good thing either. The blood was a bit over the top.

If you enjoyed the original 300, then you'll enjoy this one. If you've ever wanted to see what Vesper looks like sans shirt and bra(amazing), then you'll enjoy this one. It was fun at times, and made you want to hit the gym afterwards. But it wasn't as good as its predecessor. It lacked the awesomeness that was Gerard Butler and all his yelling uber manliness, and the heaving buckets of testosterone that were in every frame of the original. Still fun though and still a good action movie.

P.S. The main character's fake abs started to grate on my nerves.

I LOVE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!
