I know how we love to debate this prickly subject. Is 3-D starting to die off or is it a minor setback? Story here:

Given the additional cost of watching 3D movies, it has become questionable whether or not to actually view a film that was not shot in 3D. As has occurred more than once, even a film shot in native 3D, can easily be not worthwhile to view in 3D; e.g., Man of Steel and The Great Gatsby. The vast majority of viewers do not see 3D projections and that may turn out to be a wise decision - the difference in cost could be a large drink or popcorn (an even more important factor is the loss of brightness with a 3D projection, unless it is through a laser projector). When it comes to purchasing a given movie, it is probably more than worthwhile to buy the 3D version that usually has the 2D BR disc included with it for something like $5 more. So that the only other pressing reason for me to see a 3D film is that it is also in Dolby Atmos and the 2D version isn't - even then the Dolby Atmos mix may turn out to be a dud. There simply aren't many 3D Avatar's or 3D Prometheuses available that make it worthwhile to view on a big screen, but one can't know until one sees it.

I am so sick of 3D. The screens are far too dim and 3D with shaking camera movements is unwatchable. Unless James Cameron's name is attached, I have zero interest in seeing a film in 3D. In the past month I've MAN OF STEAL and WORLD WAR Z in glorious 2D.

The problem is that the state-of-the-art auditoriums in a multiplex are almost always getting assigned to show the 3D version. If the theater had IMAX or Dolby Atmos, and was showing the 2D version on a gigantic screen, I would happily forego the 3D version. Unless the director was named James Cameron, or Joe Kosinski, or Ridley Scott.

Man of Steel being the latest example for me. I went for it because I wanted to hear it in Dolby Atmos, which turned out NOT to be something that was worth it. No more 3D for me.

I put electric tape on my 3d glasses and prefer to watch the 3d movies that way. Audio only is the future of 3d.
