For the last few years I've listened mainly to classical, jazz fusion and film scores. I am especially fond of many different types of film scores from the 60s through the 90s.

Too many notes. There are simply too many notes. Just cut a few, and it will be perfect.

There's a canvas, it's called silence. Where do you want to make your mark? A little dab here? And don't forget, don't cover the whole canvas — we don't want a Rubens here!

You couldn't find a worse example to illustrate that silence is part of the music. The very purpose of this scene is to show the emperor's ignorance and misunderstanding of Mozart's music. Of all people, Mozart was probably was probably well aware that silence and pauses were important, even necessary. smile.gif

Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

- Martin Mull

I like most anything by a dead guy, from Miles to Mozart.

Eve: I thought I was through getting involved with men who were trouble. Falling in love on a look. I can't look at you.

Mickey: You have perfection about you. Your eyes have music. Your heart's the best part of your body. And when you move, every man, woman and child is forced to watch.

No kidding. rolleyes.gif I understood the film and that scene every time I saw it. Dean's "notes" buzzword triggered my memory of that scene. It wasn't an example of the illustration you mention. It was an example of someone with absolutely no knowledge of or appreciation of music arrogantly attempting to critique it (the king, not Dean) -- and the composition of the one of the greatest musical geniuses ever, to boot. It's called irony. But then you knew that, didn't you?

Classic Rock
Film Scores
80's Pop (Safety Dance, anyone? Anyone?)
Horror (Can't wait for the upcoming Monsters of Legend from Midnight Syndicate)
Classical, the more powerful the better
Comedy (King Tut, Take Off, Fish Heads)
Small amounts of jazz
Progressive rock

No opera, though. It hears my ears.

Interesting thread, but does anyone else suspect that it was started by a sock puppet spammer?

I didn't even know the first five on that list existed as types of music, but then I am very sheltered.

More or less anything.
From classic music->Pop->Rock/Metal->Techno/dubstep/insert-any-electronic-genre-you-want smile.gif
Basically if I find it good then I don't really care what type it is or which genre it belongs to.

I struggle with some genre's like death metal since I don't find it "musical", which is of course my own personal opinion and not an attempt to look down on it.
Also some piano pieces which allthough very difficult to play is "just" (to my ears) a string of notes played very rapidly.
I like the performance/skill of a pianist when some plays such piece but I don't enjoy the music itself.
