In college, the joke was that PhD stood for "pin headed dope". smile.gif

Much ado about nothing

In every movie there is a moment or two of comic relief. Fifield and Milburn, like Hudson from Aliens, are there for one reason and one reason only. To hang a movie based on these characters seem a bit overzealous.

You mean they're just as human as the rest of us? I hope you understand that some people don't think of scientists that way.

It's not uncommon for people with specialized knowledge to develop tunnel vision, seeming foolish from an outside perspective. For working scientists, a Ph.D. just gets you in the door, the new post-doc kid, you still have to prove yourself worthy.

Being subject to the same human foibles as the rest of us just makes them human, not idiots.

Like any other appeal to authority argument - They're scientists so they can't make mistakes! - it has zero value.

I'm as passionate as the next guy when it comes to movies but I believe some of us have gotten off the "let's debate" bus and transfered onto the "so's your old man" express. Take a breath, remember that it's just a movie, then go and yell at somebody that REALLY deserves it...like your kid. biggrin.gif

Agreed, though Hudson was awesome in his role and impact on Aliens. Check out his lines on IMDB. He has a TON of classic lines. I think folks expect that kind of impact and integration for the "other" characters.

Hudson: Hey, maybe you haven't been keeping up on current events, but we just got our asses kicked, pal!

I can hear him say it now.

Many, many more, but most are not family friendly. smile.gif

Which way do you prefer to communicate?
1. Sir, your schedule shows that you have an appointment with a psychologist at 2 and then a nutritionist at 3.
2. Sir, your schedule shows that you have an appointment with a scientist at 2 and then a scientist at 3.

Too many inside jokes/comments that only a few diehards on this forum can follow. Recommend shutting this one down, Larry.
