This sci-fi might not work based on the trailer. I can see the similarity between this and Prometheus.

Did not even realize that was Olivia Williams from The Sixth Sense; she lost a lot of weight.

I think we humans will always be fascinated and intrigued with the vast mysterious universe and on earth the ocean. I know I am.

That said did anyone lucky to see that TLC or NGC special on Megladon existence this week? WOW, that was incredible a 30 ft+ great white. Those videos esp that was captured off Brazil with that helicopter rescue shows that big honking dark shadow of a shark in bird eyes view. And then that last big effort spewing all that fish glum in the ocean getting Megladon to come to the surface. That was incredible documentary, I hope we can get it on video by someone soon to show they do exist and there's more than one.

There are undoubtedly more stunning marvels to be discovered in the deep oceans, very little of which have been fully explored, as strange as that may seem. That is, if our staggering capacity for polluting the oceans doesn't wipe out all those marvels before we even find them.

They just discovered a blue whale that was killed by a ship's propeller. It was amazing how many man-made toxins and pollutants were found in it's blubber, layer by layer - stuff it had absorbed during its decades at sea. Nothing on this planet escapes our imprint. Maybe it's better for the rest of the galaxy if we stay where we are.

FACTS:
1) Voyager 1 is 36 years and 16 days from its launch.
2) Is currently traveling at 38,000 MPH.
3) It has not YET entered the Ort Cloud.
4) It will take 40,000 years for it pass thru the Ort Cloud (providing it doesn't hit something).
5) astronomers consider the Ort Cloud to be the outer reaches of our Solar System.

ALL I am trying to say is we humans ain't goin' nowhere....
And probably the only way for me to truly convince you of this is for you and I to get drunk at my favorite brewpub (trust me....it really is the only way).tongue.gif

Yeah, the Ort Cloud is freakishly large, which means the Sun's gravitational pull extends out to incomprehensible distances. And you figure every star has the same kind of solar system around it. It makes interstellar travel seem not only unlikely, but pretty much impossible....

Yet, early humans probably looked at the oceans and felt the same way. Then they built a boat, then they built a bigger boat, then some of 'em climbed on the boat and drowned, then some more tried it and they drowned, then some more, then some more, and finally you've got a Starbucks on every corner. smile.gif

It can be done without FTL technology via the "leapfrog" method, as long as there are enough people to realize it's a one-way trip and are willing to give it a go. Like those early oceanic explorers. And as things deteriorate on this rock, there will be no shortage of those folks. Sometimes I feel like I was born too soon. Other times, I'm glad I got to live on an earth that's still beautiful, breathable, and habitable.

All's I'm saying is, don't rule it out. There ain't enough beer (but hey, I'm game to try!).

When I was college, one of my favorite classes was Astronomy 101.
The guy teaching it was young and his enthusiasm for the subject drew me in.

The class was a real eye-opener regarding distances on a Universe scale.
For example, we had simple mathematical exercises such as this:
IF the solar system was the size of an aspirin (or dime or baseball or something similar) how many lined up end-to-end would it take stretch to across the galaxy (in feet)?
The answer would be something like 10 miles worth (Sorry, I can't really recall the correct answer).
At any rate, my point is once distances were explained in a way someone could wrap their mind around, it became obvious to me and everyone else in the class, humans are marooned to this system and we better make damn good use of it.

And this is exactly why we humans need to understand we can't just sh_t in our own nest and solve the problem by jumping onto a Spaceship for Elysium.rolleyes.gif

But trust me, there would be no shortage of volunteers. There never have been, throughout history, when such journeys carried similar risks.

I dunno. The people who are the most cavalier about sh_tting our nest are the ones who are least concerned about the consequences. For them, there will always be an Elysium waiting, pure and unspoiled. And when they ruin that one, they'll just find or build another. As depressing and uninspiring as that is, it might be the only way man becomes a true spacefaring species.

I believe most journeys or migrations were done under duress and usually led by a charismatic lunatic bent on fame and/or fortune.

Hey, don't assume I thought the doc was real; I've never seen it (or even heard of it). I don't watch the Discovery Channel much anymore since they're not much interested in science anymore. The point I was making is that very little of the deep oceans have been explored, and there may well be creatures down there we haven't yet discovered. Maybe big ones.

But one thing is certain: if they do exist, they've been soaking up our pollution just like that blue whale I referenced above. If a remaining megalodon actually did survive to this time, chances are we've probably killed it with dioxin runoff or similar pollutants by now. And we'll never even know. frown.gif

Post-Of-The-Day.

FWIW, a little confession...I watched this program too (at least most of it).

I know more than a little bit about Megalodon Cacharodon....I have a 5 inch, 30 million year old fossilized tooth on display atop a cherry cabinet.

This "documentary" (as designated in my DirecTV Guide) is a big f_cking fraud perpetuated by the Discovery Channel (once known for producing actual SCIENCE programs) on the American public for the sake of pure greed, pure $$$.

The program starts with a fictitious tragic event presented as FACT, with a journalistic report and a subsequent investigation....complete with fictitious scientists, eyewitnesses, events, etc.
Mind you this is THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL, not TMZ.
During the first half, I wondered out loud to my wife, "why the f_ck haven't I heard about this?"confused.gif
After awhile, I began to realize "scientists" would never, ever say sh_t like these guys do during "interviews."rolleyes.gif
To say I was pissed about being tricked by this mammoth B.S. presented as FACT is a serious understatement.

Sheez, that ain't right. There's should be some FCC or SEC of TV to regulate crap like this making us think this legit looking doc is fake. That's just so stupid, why make a fake doc I really don't get it..unless it's some farce or comedy thingy like Scary movie 5 or something.

It was a "hook."
A cheap B.S. way to get people to watch their f_cking commercials.

OTOH, this was a great way to test whether or not folks TRULY care about what the truth actually is.
