An alien seductress preys upon hitchhikers in Scotland.

If ScarJo doesn't talk much it could be cool.

Hey now this looks good!

Sorry it took so long to respond. This thread is slammed. Yes, it looks interesting except Scar Jo sucks.

An art house film funded by the British Lottery and BFI. In other words, this movie put a lot of people to work. It is best preceded by a couple of shots of Teacher's Scottish whiskey (because it is shot in Scotland and to further their economy) and at the end of it by a couple of more shots to forget it. In very limited release, so far. Maybe it will be a cult classic with a naked Scarlett Johansson.

She doesn't have that fantastic of a body, although reviewers seem to be concentrating on it. Without her, the movie has zero draw. Why she agreed to make it, I have no idea. She must have been bowled over by the artistic crap. But some reviewers seem to like it - which shows where their minds are and who can blame them.

True, but after upper chest fix she is more pleasing to the eye.
Unfortunately, like most of the young ones, she doesn't appear to believe in exercising.

Well, she certainly isn't fat. This must have been an extremely low budget movie with a considerable bit of it shot in the dark - drastically reducing production costs. That budget also extended into how Scarlett looks on screen. She should look 1000% better in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

fookoo_2010 04-04-2014 11:20 PM

The odd thing about this movie is that it is based on a novel by Michel Faber who was also credited with the screen play. If you look up his book on Amazon: Under the Skin, the movie leaves out a lot, making one wonder what was going through the director's head to throw together such a confusing movie that became almost boring in spots. I was talking with my movie buddy and someone, in front of us, overheard our discussion and commented that the book is entirely different from the movie. It is Sci-fi that in opening credits bring back opening screen remembrances of Predator and 2001: A Space Odyssey. As usual, if you want to see it, go see it.

After reading the title of this thread, I somehow have the "Under the Sea" song from The Little Mermaid stuck in my head.

I'm only posting this to hopefully cause others to suffer with me.

Since the beginning of cinema art over 100 years ago, the world has waited for one event: dimly lit Scarlett Johansson appearing entirely nude, posing in alien-like incomprehension before a mirror. Life will never be the same.

* * *

Honestly, it is a creepy-ass film. Sort of Solaris meets The Man Who Fell to Earth as directed by a sleepy David Lynch. The slow camera work and bizarre score provide most of the SF/horror menace.

Much mystery and no explanation: did audiences go for that? It's ok with me. I haven't read any reviews and don't know the book, but my interpretation: she's a tool, an alien lure to bring in human men to be digested or whatever happens to them. She begins breaking down for some reason and forgets her function.

That scene where she starts to have sex, but grabs a lamp to inspect herself: she'd forgotten that she's not anatomically complete. She just lures the victims: she doesn't have actual sex with them. She becomes more human as she fails, knowing fear and surprise for the first time.

The motorcycle guys also seem to be alien operatives. I think they're looking for her but the film ends before they find her.

Redbox has the Blu-ray.

Watched this a while ago, and I don't know if I liked it or not. Of course a nude Scarlet Johanson is awesome, in the true sense of the word, and the whole setup is pretty cool, but the slow burn makes it hard to get sucked in. Creepy, good, strange, sexy and sad are some of the words that come to mind... Scarlet's acting is great in its minimalism.

mattg3 07-20-2014 07:23 AM

You would think with all her money and free time and knowing she was going to be nude, scarlett would have hit the gym a bit to tame some of that softness. Then again the world has moved toward this soft, fleshy look in the past few years so perhaps this is the look the director wanted.

Roger Lococco 07-20-2014 08:39 AM

her body looked fine, were some of you expecting her to look like a fitness model?

That softness is what keeps you in bed all day.

I watched it last night on BD. It's shown in its OAR (1:85:1). The featurettes were interesting and surprising. I loved the film and I don't collect much anymore but I may collect this one.

Gave it 30 minutes and quit. I rarely hit the eject button. Did Terrence Malick have anything to do with this? :D

NorthSky 08-02-2014 05:36 PM

Speaking of the director, Jonathan Glazer, he sure is different. ...And so is Terrence Malick*, who I adore.

Ok this was bad, very bad, no very-very bad. Not going to waste another min on this POT and clear this from my memory base forever. :frown:

Kinda like Sh** Stream? Yeah, me too.

Michael Sargent 08-04-2014 08:06 AM

Watched it last night. Can not recommend it.

It might have made a good short, if you had an editor with a very sharp knife. But as it was they took a thin but interesting premise and stretched it way too thin. I am reminded of the quote about "Pearl Harbor": A good 2 hour movie spread over 3 hours.
