Not a good sign. Ridley Scott has this amazing cast and it\s a big budget film (for an R rated pic). Yet not a single review! The film opens in three days. This is usually the sign of a stinker.

I don't quite know what to make of this, but the trailer looks interesting. And like you said, amazing cast indeed! How is that a sign of a stinker, is it that the studio didn't do press screenings for the film? If so, then yes, not a good sign!

A couple people on my staff have seen it. The movie is being screened. There's probably an embargo on publishing reviews until Friday.

I wouldn't read too much into this just yet, though I am inherently skeptical that Ridley Scott is still capable of making a decent film.

????? I don't even understand your statement. All I did was point out something that tends to be true. Films that open in three days where no reviews are available tend to be stinkers.

Wed and Thur you may see something. Most of the good reviewers tend to post not that far in advance.

It is highly unusual for this kind of delay. It just doesn't happen with films that have been receiving good reviews.

I said the above because of this, "Yet not a single review!" (exclamation point = high emotion).
Besides, why would you even care what professional reviewers think about individual movies?

I’ll be watching this on BD. We just spent $39 to see Gravity in 3D. That’s 2 liters of vodka or 1+ case of beer. The vodka will last 2 weeks, the beer 3 – hey, its football season. biggrin.gif The movie lasted one hour and thirty minutes. There is no contest. tongue.gif

Drat, that is a bad sign.

I'm a long-ago crestfallen Scott fan, always ready to have my hopes dashed again. But for some reason the trailer made this one look like some fun so my hopes rose a bit. Re-cranking down expectations...

The beer 3 days I assume. biggrin.gif I paid $ 20 to see Gravity so I know where you're coming from. That's 2 liters of the good stuff right, (about the vodka). smile.gif

Yes, it is indeed. I am puzzled by the posters who questioned your comments, which are indeed dead on with respect to a dearth of reviews so close to a major film's opening.

Yep. Too much money at stake to keep it from the press unless it sucks.

Never doubted it. I think it was Roger Ebert who pointed that sign out with major movies in general years ago. Big studios have too much money tied up in major pictures simply not to screen them in advance for the press to review unless they suck really bad. Then their strategy seems to be keep everything on wraps in the hopes we can salvage as big an opening weekend as possible in order to cut our losses.

In the age of the internet, it is a sucker who goes to a major motion picture at full price not having first investigated what others are saying about it. If no one is talking, be afraid for your wallet and your time. Be very afraid.

Film critics simply don't have the same sort of power they used to back in the day. General viewers don't pay any attention to what film critics have to say anymore. Audiences will flock in droves to see movies that receive universally scathing reviews, and stay far away from those that critics rave about. (And yet they always act surprised when those badly-reviewed movies turn out to not be very good.) Studios have noticed this and are no longer worried about whether their movies get screened for press early or not.

I fail to see what the studios have to gain pre-releasing movies to critics for screening.

As Josh points out, the general public doesn't pay attention to reviews and it IS the general public who determines whether or not a movie becomes a blockbuster.
The G.P. is influenced much more by word-of-mouth from friends, co-workers, and family (Gravity is an example of this).
Regardless of whether it is a Thumbs Up or Thumbs down, ticket buyers don't really care about the opinions of people they don't know.

Also, movie stars have fans who will see anything that has their idol in it.
Star power is a real thing.

If one is interested in Cormac McCarthy as a writer & producer, it is worth seeing. There is some stuff in the movie that I have never seen anything like it before. But the movie is a bit wordy, but that's the writer. Anton Chigurh anyone? After all, directed by Ridley Scott and is not nearly as bad as some seem to think.

Pretty big bomb. Especially considering the cast. And a D grade cinemascore from general audiences. Ouch! That is crazy low and rarely achieved (if you can call it an achievement).

I'll see it on Blu-Ray or HBO and go see GRAVITY for a second time this weekend (taking my two nieces).

This is a direct consequence of a generation that was raised to believe that they are all perfect and wonderful and all-knowing, and that the only opinion that matters in the world is their own, no matter how ill-informed it may be. Their first impresion is always right, and there's absolutely nothing they could ever learn from hearing someone else's perspective on anything.
