I finally screwed up my courage, rented the BD, and watched the film again tonight. After I saw it in the theater I gave it 7 Stars out of 10, mostly because of how beautiful it looked and sounded and its remarkable ensemble cast. Its, to me at least, weak screenplay and McQueen's unremitting focus on violence took me out of the film. I have stated my thoughts in this regard in earlier posts so won't reprise them here. again tonight, I was tempted to lower my vote from 7 Stars to 6 but in the interest of fairness and consistency I have decided to leave it at 7.

depicting the deranged Epps first directing the whipping of the slave Patsey and then doing it himself isn't "torture porn" I have no idea what would be, given the background that Epps had a nonconsensual sexual relationship with Patsey and beat her at his jealous wife's insistence. It was ugly!
