His deafness is well known. From Wiki:

Around 1796, by the age of 26, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. He suffered from a severe form of tinnitus, a "ringing" in his ears that made it hard for him to hear music; he also tried to avoid conversations. By the last decade of his life he was almost totally deaf. He gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose; many of his most admired works come from this period.

The cause of Beethoven's deafness is unknown, but it has variously been attributed to typhus, auto-immune disorders (such as systemic lupus erythematosus), and even his habit of immersing his head in cold water to stay awake. The explanation from Beethoven's autopsy was that he had a "distended inner ear," which developed lesions over time.

Beethoven's affliction has always haunted me. The very idea that the composer generally regarded as the greatest musical genius of the Romantic Age was stricken by deafness as a young man makes my blood run cold.

Agreed. Some people get dealt a pretty nutty hand. Reminds me of the "Time Enough at Last" episode of Twilight Zone with Burgess Meridith.

What a great episode of television Time Enough at Last was! It was as dark as anything I can remember seeing on television. before or since. I have watched that episode many times over the years and it never loses a step. Your analogizing the plight of Serling's star crossed protagonist, Henry Bemis, to the equally cursed Beethoven was apt indeed, I thought. At his best there was never any screenwriter better than Rod Serling.

Franin -- I will be anxious to learn what you think of American Hustle. I thought it was the best film of the year and was disappointed when it didn't win the Best Picture Oscar. Be patient with it though. There is much in the first 45 minutes that is expository and requires more than ordinary attention to penetrate. The effort is worn it, though, because the payoff is wonderful.

Forgot I had this from Netflix. Been sitting on my coffee table for a couple of weeks. Should probably get around to watching it.

Have the Wolf of Wallstreet collecting dust too. At 3 hours long that's a commitment.

Finally watched this tonight. Amy Adams rocked those outfits like nobody's business. She looked good.

I don't know how many times I've told the wife not to put metal in the scientific oven.

Sometimes it fools you. We have dinner plates that have a decorative metal ring around them, but I thought it was just paint. Put one in the ol' scientific oven to warm up some leftovers. POP! SIZZLE! SMOKE! Not good. Wife mad. Archi in doghouse. frown.gif

Happened to me before too.
After all these years of annoying Ms. Oink in the kitchen, I recently decreed 2 new rules for our pigpen:
1) All dinnerware must be microwave-compatible.
2) All cookware, dinnerware, utensils, etc. must be dishwasher-safe.

Naturally, she told me to go f_ck myself....biggrin.gif

Lol. I've done that with those Chinese take-out containers with the tiny metal handle. I'm like, it's so wee, there's no way it'll mess up the scientific oven... redface.gif

Nothing to do with metal in a nuker, but an embarrassing story my wife likes to tell. I put a bowl of pork & beans in the nuker, or so I thought, and 6 minutes later when I went to take them out they weren't there. So when in the hell are they?!!! In my absent-mindedness, I put them in the cabinet that is directly over the nuker. We laughed our a$$es off.

Yep, alcohol was involved. smile.gif
