I'm just speechless.

"Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his New York City apartment, a law-enforcement official said.

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

Mr. Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film, "Capote."

Sad indeed. He was a master of his craft. Immensely watchable in everything. " Brandt can't watch, though, or he has to pay a hundred."

The most recent DVD I bought is Happiness, in which stars. I was planning on watching it in the next day or two. Now, it will be with a twinge of sadness. Unintentional irony.

It's the Post, so take the first paragraph with a grain of salt until there is confirmation elsewhere.

It was his to "throw away."

He knew what he was doing, he knew the dangers, he was willing to risk his life.
Why?
Who knows....the answer died with him.

But it's still tragic nonetheless.

Completely agree it was his to throw away, but that doesn't make it any less sad or wasteful.

With all due respect, I wish people would keep judgment out of a thread meant to express loss and grief and pay tribute to someone.

When it comes to drug abuse and/or addiction, you can't understand it without understanding personal pain, and without a healthy dose of empathy and compassion. For far too many, drug abuse and/or addiction are a form of self-medication. Get that through your judgmental heads, and it starts to make a kind of sad sense.

Otherwise, keep your judgments to yourself. You might want to look for your compassion too. You've probably got some somewhere.

Very sad indeed, though maybe not altogether surprising I guess. He really was a very good actor. But actors like that, it just seems to me that much of their craft comes from a pretty deep well of self doubt. Combine money, fame, the gnawing doubts as to why that girl is here right now, the dealers and pimps and blood suckers that attach to anyone famous, etc... I probably wouldn't last nearly that long.

Well said.

He was an adult.
He made his own decisions.
Whether those decisions are "wasteful" is not really for others to decide.
It is what it is.

I don't think anyone around here is happy to see his death at a young age.

I can't believe he was only 46 years old. He looks at least 10 years older than that. Drugs age people, then kill them.

Not talking about his "decisions". Talking about the loss of a talented actor who could have contributed more. That's a waste.

Really sad news, one of my favourite movie characters is "Gust Avrakotos" in "Charlie Wilson's War".
Very talented actor and it's sad that we won't see more of PSH.

Yeah look at photos of him over the last few years. Looks like a lot of weight gain. I guess I will never understand the drug problem that people have.

I thought his best film was "Capote". I thought he portrayed Truman Capote very well. I remember reading "In Cold Blood" in our high school English class and the film "Capote" brought more realism to the tragic event. I guess the biggest impact scene in the movie was when Hoffman entered the viewing room of the funeral home and the dead silence in the theater. Seems like you could just hear his breathing.

Very sad. Unfathomable, really. When you have that much going for you.....

The Hunger Games final installment is going to have to regroup. He went from the villain to the hero in the last reel, undoubtedly was slotted for a big part in the wrap-up film(s).

Again, it is not ours to judge.

Would I or YOU or ANYONE else in this forum make the same decisions he made in his life in his situation?
I dunno....we can't really know.
However, it is still sad.

Not meaning to be "judgemental", but this happens to be the very first thing I thought of when I heard of Hoffman's unfortunate demise.
