What was the last hi-def/hi-res movie that you watched?

I checked for this thread but couldn't find it. ...So I guess I just created it.

Last night I revisited this, in 3D :::

http://images3.static-bluray.com/mov...2748_large.jpg

* I watched and listened to it @ Master Reference volume level. ...WoW!
...Truly involving on all sense's level! It is one of the very best sound scoring with an excellent music soundtrack.

And the picture quality in 3D is much more "you-are-there" immersing perspective.

Am all in, no matter what other people might have to say or not in their own original/peculiar way.

If you haven't experienced it yet in 3D and @ Reference Master volume level in your own home, what are you waiting for? ...Afraid of space and blowing out all your speakers to smithereens?

NorthSky 07-14-2014 07:44 PM

Some precision:

Blu-ray video movies, documentaries, video music concerts, Blu-ray Audio, HD DVD movies, High-def movies (BD & all) that you burned, downloaded, Netflixed, Pandorazed, ...@ 720p, 1080i, 1080p, 4K, ...all good here.

High-def picture, and preferably high-res audio, but not an abso!ute requirement.

* VHS tapes, Laser disc movies, DVD video movies, DVD-Audio, ...you can if you really want to, but they are not high-def picture and high-res sound. ...I'm easy; DVD, Laser Disc, VHS movies are good.
A movie is a movie, or a documentary, or a show on TV, CineFlix, Asterix, Obelix, Idefix, Panoramix, ... all good.

- 35mm and 70mm films and IMAX films are also part of the permissible deals; so the movies that you last watched @ your local cineplex, private screening venues, IMAX theaters, regular public theaters, ...are all good too.

Simply put everything that has moving images is good. And the higher the value the better the result. :)

Late last night I watched this 1974 documentary ::

http://images2.static-bluray.com/mov...9406_large.jpg

Back to memory lane, meh. ...In mono sound.

8mile13 07-15-2014 04:08 PM

I watched a docu and a movie.. I watch docu's on my laptop and movie's on the TV. PBS docu Dutch New York and the movie (blu-ray) Gone baby gone.

NorthSky 07-15-2014 05:01 PM

'Gone Baby Gone' is a good flick.
{Got the Blu too}

Last night I watched this ::

http://images4.static-bluray.com/mov...2816_large.jpg

First, I'm a big Scarlett Johansson's fan. It is totally natural for me to follow her career onscreen.
...She's pretty, charismatic, talented with her own uniqueness. I just like her a lot; very easy to follow her onscreen.

This film is my bag. It is as different as it can from life's own boring routine. So it might not be for all people, who have a normal life with a normal job and a normal routine, because they might find it a little too un-ordinary for their own taste. ...It's a way of speech...because normal people might also just love it.
But if your life is not boring and that you have an open mind then you will like it, or then maybe not; if you are the type who always criticize from a negative perspective, or, who simply doesn't like it.

Me, I love this flick! ...Passionately. And I will revisit it, once, twice, and who knows...

Usually I don't rate films with numbers; for the film itself and for the picture and sound quality. ...And the extras; I never mentioned them (99% of the time) unless something special and that I take the time to explore. ...So many movies, so much music, so little time...
And I won't change this here (scoring), but just keep flowing my own way by sharing my emotional impact, and what I think of it too, of course, and even thinking ahead and see how it can affect different type of viewers.

This is the type of flick (movie) that is best to not know anything about, and simply watch it without extreme prejudice.

Here's the story; ...

- Here's my score (rating) for the film: Different, new, magic, giving, related, highly worthy.
- Picture quality: Subliminal, relative, pleasant, obscure, dreamlike, just fine.
- Music quality: Flowing, constructed, stress-free, absorbing, internal, goes smoothly.

It's a free discussion on personal emotional impact from moving pictures and music scores (and CGI effects and sound effects).

And the more members sharing their experience the less boring this thread could end up (like a solo affair for example).
Critics are super welcome (all type), and questions as well (if you happen to have some).

Nice thread.

I've been a little lax on movie viewin lately, but the last BD I watched was Prometheus, and before that Oblivion (w/Tom Cruise), and Lawrence of Arabia.

I recently went on a little BD buying binge though, and have a lot of other stuff on deck, including Frozen, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Skyfall (none of which I've seen), as well as Master & Commander, Beetlejuice, and the original 1967 Casino Royale with Peter Sellers and David Niven, to name just few.

I haven't been to a theater in ages, but I am a fan of the "Apes" franchise, and own all the originals on BD. So I might brave the sticky floors and annoying cellphones to check out DOTPOTA. Reviews sound fairly positive.

Been watchin a lot of 1080p and some 2160p (4K) music vids on YouTube as well. A recent example with some fairly striking colors/visuals by Ms. Perry...

NorthSky 07-18-2014 09:18 PM

Nice grouping ADU. ...Flicks' selection.
-> 'M&C' is superb sound wise. ...Katy Perry is super colorful indeed (I have one Blu of her; music concert).
...'Frozen' I like very much. ...And all your other selections; Lawrence, Oblivion, Prometheus 3D, Skyfall, Casino Royale.

- I like your avatar. ...And nice to see you here.

Very very early this morning, on a pitch dark black satin sky with a half baked moon on the horizon, and sparkled of scintillating stars all above, I revisited this intriguing David Lynch's flick ::

http://images3.static-bluray.com/mov...9084_large.jpg

* The obscure atmosphere, the music score, the characters, ...everything is masterpiece entertainment of the highest caliber.
Extremely Highly Recommended (mine vision)

Merci. And please keep the reviews comin. I'm enjoyin them.

Took my main HDTV (a 34" Sony 1080i CRT) to the recycling center today in anticipation of replacing it with a new flat panel TV. Currently lookin at the Samsung 51F5300 (1080p) and 43F4500 (720p) plasmas, which are both on sale, and being discontinued in a few months. Until then, I have my trusty 24" Wards SD CRT to keep me company. :) Not exactly "state-of-the-art", but it still produces a pretty nice picture, and also works quite well with my BD player.

NorthSky 07-19-2014 09:12 PM

It don't matter to me if one watches @ the full IMAX Theater, or from his 10" tablet.

The impact is different for sure, and still the films move us... And there are no rules for being transported.
It is the essence ...

NorthSky 07-20-2014 01:05 PM

I re-watched this last night ::

http://images2.static-bluray.com/mov...2237_large.jpg

* I'd swear that it was recorded/mixed/masterminded/encoded in Dolby Atmos! ...Spooky!

- While they are getting ready for battle inside the ship's belly (that's also where we are, us the viewers), with them cannons and balls and gun powder; right above, overhead, on the upper deck, you can clearly hear the crew running around in preparation for that battle.

And when the first shots are fired, your guts explode inside your own belly button!

NorthSky 07-21-2014 02:57 PM

Last night I revisited this flick ::

http://images4.static-bluray.com/mov...1079_large.jpg

* Cinema Obscure, for sure. ...Follow that rabbit...

This film deserves repeated viewings. Because if you can first stand of doing only one (viewing to the very end), it will abstract your brain to a point of no return.
The only way to recoup the mystery plot is to give it a chance; that is the least that you owe to your own self. ...And in the process regain your sanity.

This is true cinema direct from a true visionary, an artist in the all sense of the world. ...Cinema for the brain.
...An autobiography of the master himself.

Overall (everything): :kiss::kiss::kiss: (out of 5)

NorthSky 07-22-2014 08:35 PM

This film I really like; it's a 'film noir' genre with a great music score by Angelo Badalamenti (jazzy), and with sparkles of alternative/rock music by the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Lou Reed, Marylin Manson, Rammstein, among others.
And I revisited it last night.

http://images3.static-bluray.com/mov...5410_large.jpg

* Directed by the "cinema noir" master David Lynch (1997).

My rating: :kiss::kiss::kiss::kiss::kiss:

I re-watched this last night ::

* Don't trust any review/er; trust only me: This is a Masterpiece of Poetic Cinema.
Extremely Highly Recommended.

Content: Ten (out of 10).

{Picture quality is very good.} ...Got the Blu.

* Did you watch it twice?

Morpheo 07-24-2014 04:38 AM

I finally decided to look at this thread and what do I see? 3 of my favorite films (Master And Commander, Muhlolland Drive and Lost Highway) Where did you get the 2 Lynch and how are they (PQ/AQ/Extras...)?

Yesterday I watched Cleopatra (U.S digibook), again... Stellar release for a larger-than-life production, even by today's standards. I've always loved this film. :)

NorthSky 07-24-2014 05:53 AM

You can get the David Lynch BD movies through various channels, or Amazon international. Several 'versions' are avail. ...France, UK, etc.
Picture & sound are fine (better than on DVD), and if the experience is improved, on the screen and in the sound department, all the better.
- The extras; ...so many movies, so much music, so little time.

I do have 'Cleopatra' on Blu; for the classic story, decors & all.
- And stick around; you're going to have a taste of artistic cinema.

-> Still amazing! That, is Cinema! ...The opening is what Art of Moving Pictures is all about.
The lines, the faces, the vistas, the details, the music, the subtle and not so subtle sounds; it's all there. ...My favorite Western of all times.

This one, deserves a newly remastered Dolby Atmos audio surround soundtrack. ...Just for pushing the 'sound hound' boundaries further in a 2014's world. ...Just to check it out. ...An additional one, not to replace anything original. ...And in 3D too!

This flick is a masterpiece; the director Sergio Leone, is a true artist. The composer Ennio Morricone, is a top contributor.

I just love movies, on Blu.

- Not bad, not good, just in the middle. ...Fun entertainment still. ...Leave your concepts at the front door.
Technically (sound & picture)? ...Some CGI some sound fabrication from somewhere else...looks and sounds great for a 2014 flick. ...But could be still much better (I'm a natural sound & picture addict). ...Dolby Atmos perhaps? ...And certainly 4K.

* One thing worth mentioning here; no 3D version for the North American continent. :( ...Unless you're from Brazil. ...Because the 3D version does exist, and they put a lot of effort into it too. ... Noah Better in 3D
