Automata - Antonia Banderas,..Asimov robot SciFi

I like to ask thee why are we getting crap openings this weekend like Addicted & Alexander the clown when there's this with the same released date? Now this looks like something Elysium could have been.

A while back i saw Intruders which was a spanish film but i did not knew that. Clive Owen was starring. The name is english ''Intruders'', so one thinks it is a english/american movie. Turned out that folks in several segments of the movie were talking spanish. After a while i had enough of that and stopped the movie.

Recently i saw the movie Snowpiercer which is suppost to be a english/american movie directed by a korean. In that movie a few of the main characters were koreans talking korean. I hate it when directors do that.

So i wonder if this movie will have some of such surprises... btw Banderas and Griffith, who both are in this movie, divorced in 2014 after 18 years of marriage..

I am tolerant of a few words or a sentence but not when there are whole conversations in non-english when the movie is presented as being english with an english cast.

In lots of countries you need to have subtitles during the whole movie when there are several languages used and you want to understand it all. When you turn off subtitles you will not know what folks are saying when they switch languages.

That always bugged me about Star Trek as well. I mean, it's one thing to have Worf speak a couple of words here and there it's ok, 'cause he's one of them, but then they would have full conversations in Klingon. If I wanted to see a movie in Klingon, I'd move there.

I can't really recommend that. I spent a year there during my stint as a Zilm'kach salesman. It can be fun but the women are absolutely exhausting. At one point I didn't sleep for a solid week. Apparently, "No means Yes" is taught in primary school.

Not mention that, every time you go our drinking with your buddies, you are pretty much expected to have a fight to the death with someone, else they call you a sissy (and they call you a sissy in Klingon, which is WAY worse.)

Yeah, I did briefly contemplate the big move, back when my dream was to open a racht stand. Then I sprained my epiglottis in a half-hearted attempt to learn the language.

Unless you are a polyglot you must watch the movie and read the subtitles simultaneously. It is not a matter of difficulty. It has to do with the fact that i do not care about subtitles and do not want to see them when i watch a movie.

Your alternatives then are either:

1) Watch only dubbed movies. IMO, that's way more distracting than subtitles. Your mileage may vary.

or

2) Don't ever watch movies where any characters ever speak a foreign language. That's your prerogative, but you're missing out on a lot of great cinema.

I don't know. I couldn't imagine the Pai Mei / Beatrix scenes from Kill Bill in English. I would just take the teeth out of it for me.

I watch a lot of english movies. Rarely folks speak lots of non-english.

When i want to see a non english movie i will use subtitles. I am ok with that.

Well, wadda ya know this thread didn't take a nose dive after all. The minute after I started the thread I read the 4 imdb reviews they had so far & 3/4 was very bad. So I cringe & wanted to go make like a do-do bird n hide my head in the hole.

The trailer looked sooo slick & tricked out I got my panties twisted up out of excitement that this amazing looking sci-fi hasn't been marketed at all.

But you have to admit the scenes where the robots confronted Banderas they had really real human-like expression it was sorta cool n creepy. And the cinematography/direction looked just like Spielberg or zemekis. Good or bad, these are the type of films I never ever get tired of so I wholeheartedly support it & welcome more.

I watched this when it was free for Xbox live members a few weeks ago. It wasn't a very good movie.

It kind of came off as Blade Runner lite. The pacing was terrible, as was some of the acting. Some of the concepts were interesting enough, but the plot didn't really dray those out as well as one might have hoped.

I will say that they did do a pretty good job breathing life into the robots, but that wasn't enough to make up for the disappointing storyline.

Can't even recommend this one as a rental.

Scott

It's worth a rental if you're into the short story stuff like Outer Limits and Twilight Zone. These recent smaller productions (The Machine, The Signal) really shine among the CGI blur hollywood is putting out.
