Movies we wish would get an Atmos Mix

Hi,
This is a spin-off from the Dolby Atmos (home theater version) thread under the Audio/AVR sub-forum. We've had discussion about movies on that thread, which have commercial Atmos theater mixes that have - or haven't - gotten home Atmos mixes as part of their initial BD release. For example, T4 is the first movie with an Atmos mix released to consumers. However, at this writing (mid-October 2014), several movies that had commercial mixes in Atmos, like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes or Guardians of the Galaxy, apparently won't get Atmos mixes in their planned holiday 2014 releases.

Meanwhile, we all have our own legacy content of DVD and BluRay format movies, as well as streamed format with the likes of Kaleidoscope, that can enjoy Dolby Surround upmixing, but either pre-dated or weren't candidates for Atmos. But...as many of us that already have Atmos AVRs or went to Dolby demos at CEDIA can attest, there's nothing like the real thing.

So, what movies would you like to see with an Atmos re-release once the technology gets more accessible to the mainstream, and ideally why? As somebody that doesn't prefer action movies as my favorite content (but still enjoys them), this is an opportunity for those of us more into drama or well-crafted art films to use our imaginations...and engage in wishful thinking.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - the whole movie lends itself to a 3D audio landscape... it would only heighten the realism of the film.

E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The Goonies

Gremlins
esappy and ambesolman like this.

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

Apocalypse Now (not Redux) - the first movie released in traditional 5.1 surround in 1979 -- remixed by Walter Murch himself into Atmos.

Platoon

Born on the Fourth of July

Jacob's Ladder (the whole creepy vibe of the movie would be enhanced!)

Listen up, studios! Just say "NO" to DNR and EE!!

For the moment, I'd love to see Atmos mixes of:

Apocalypse Now, all six Star Wars movies, Amadeus, Backdraft, Act of Valor, The French Connection, Fantasia/Fantasia 2000, Top Gun, Casper, Inception, The Rights Stuff, SE7EN, The Towering Inferno, Aladdin, Cliffhanger, Saving Private Ryan, The Abyss, Altered States, Das Boot, Back to the Future, Speed, Crimson Tide, Independence Day, Contact, Black Hawk Down, Master & Commander, The Incredibles, Wanted, Skyfall, Lone Survivor.

SE7EN? I thought I was the only one that remembered that movie. And Altered States....that would be a truly immersive experience . We have some similar tastes.

I'll add to your list and Keith's (in stream of consciousness, top of mind order):
2012
The Fountain
Vanilla Sky
Youth Without Youth
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Alien
Rollerball (the badass James Caan original)
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (for the last 1/2 hour, since it's so intense)
Armageddon
The Day After Tomorrow
The Hunt for Red October
ST: The Wrath of Khan and First Contact
Braveheart

It'd be nice if the lists could be prioritized somehow. Maybe by number of mentions of particular titles by different people? While lists on AVS might not have a significant effect on the people who actually make such choices, it couldn't hurt.

I agree - let's give this a couple of days and I'll pull something together to put in Post #1 . Maybe we do a poll of the top 10 or 15 and leave it up?

Wow, great lists so far!

I have to give another shoutout for Master and Commander, Gravity and The Towering Inferno.

I would like to add The Exorcist to the list. "The Version You've Never Seen" version already creeps me out, I can only imagine how scary this movie could be with a proper Atmos mix.

Being a former submariner myself, any submarine movie could greatly benefit from Atmos. U-571 depth charge scene could be truly terrifying!

Gladiator
The Matrix
Any Clint Eastwood spaghetti western. Those wide open plains shots with the wind blowing and the tumbleweed rolling could greatly add to the atmosphere of the movie.
The Book of Eli
Desperado
Twister
Finding Nemo
The original Nighmare On Elm Street
The Mummy
Constantine
How To Train Your Dragon
Wall-E
Face/Off (it would be nice to just have a lossless soundtrack for this movie)
Drag Me To Hell
Armageddon
Pitch Black
Backdraft
Blade 2

Honestly any creature feature/horror movie or disaster flick can greatly benefit from an Atmos mix. There are always scenes in which everything goes quiet just before the scare moment and having a monster or ghost making scratching noises from above you is extremely creepy.

While not a movie, I would love to hear Atmos surround mixes from innovative musicians like Blue Man Group, Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross, NIN, Pink Floyd or The Crystal Method. Two of my favorite music albums in surround sound are DSOTM and Linkin Parks' Reanimation. They both sound amazing in 5.1 and I think it could almost be a religious experience in 5.1.4! Or better yet, 9.2.6.

Just the first few that come to mind:

2001
Alien/Aliens
Matrix
Star Wars/Empire

Probably loads more if I think about it, but that would keep me grinning for a while.

I think that version was called 'The Right Stiff' (after the long march).

Easy.

I want every movie that had a nice mix to be remixed in Atmos. But before that let's get movies already mixed in Atmos released in Atmos. And while all this is happening I want new movies that were released in Atmos in cinema to be released in Atmos for home video.

See various movie studios? This is what we want.

Maybe but most of what I demanded of them is fairly easy to do. Just requires them to get off their butts and do something about it.

Saving private Ryan, and also... THE HAUNTING.

With an ATMOS remix on BD I think the haunting would blow speakers. The DVD was already brutal.

Watch the original Robert Wise film in B&W and mono. Don't need Atmos for that classic.

Terrific movies IMO And they would benefit greatly from Atmos remixes. of course, 'Catching Fire' was mixed theatrically in Atmos anyway so that one is a no-brainer. Obviously, the most important, by far, would be all the Marvel Comic Universe movies though.
