List your Underrated/Overrated Movies

This is something me and my friends do. Movies are so subjective so there is always a lot of interesting discussions. Also, it is amusing because some of my younger friends have never seen some classics. Also, I tend not to like artsy-fartsy or weird and stick mainly to the mainstream. If you don't feel like making a whole list, please post your list of underrated gems, so maybe I can find something good to watch.

Underrated Tier:
Moon
Memento
V for Vendetta
Triangle
The Fugitive
12 Monkeys
Westworld
Falling Down
The Game

Bad Movies/Overrated Tier:
Donnie Darko
Brazil
Big Lebowski
Fear and Loathing
American Pyscho
Eternal Sunshine Spotless Mind
Napoleon Dynamite
The Fountain

Good Movies/Overrated Tier:
Fight Club
The Godfather
Inception
Sunshine
The Shinning
Pulp Fiction
No Country for Old Men

God Tier:
Se7en
The Prestige
Goodfellas
Godfather 2
Children of Men
The Dark Knight
Alien
Aliens
The Thing (1982)
The Usual Suspects
Jurassic Park
Reservoir Dogs

The God tier is the most overrated?

You're going to get vastly different opinions, but I feel these are overrated by some:

Both Hobbit movies
Titanic
Prometheus
Return of the Jedi
Raging Bull
Most Spike Lee movies (not including the Malcom X film, which I thought was quite good)
Avatar
Holloween
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The Master (ugh)
Gravity
Deception
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
National Treasure
Star Trek (reboot)
Fargo
No Country for Old Men
American Beauty

Underrated:

Oblivion
Thunderheart
The Client
The Mighty Quinn
Tommy Boy
Alien 3
Wreck-it Ralph
Alien Nation
Talk Radio
Mortal Thoughts
Ridley Scott's Robin Hood
Serenity

Those just kind of filter into my mind. Maybe I'll try to think of more later.

I won't get into overrated, but some that I feel are underrated:

1. Your Friends and Neighbors
2. Mystery Men
3. Gattica
4. What Dreams May Come
5. HurleyBurley
6. Barcelona
7. The Five Year Engagement
8. Fletch
9. Grand Canyon
10. The Anniversary Party
11. The Fisher King
12. Shop Girl
13. The Family Stone
14. Deep Impact
15. Beautiful Girls
16. The Cake Eaters
17. Perfect Sense (massively under appreciated/known)
18. Live as a House
19. Ellie Parker
20. Dazed and Confused
21. The Last Kiss
22. The Descendants
23. Purple Violets
24. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
25. Foxfire
26. A Lot Like Love
27. Butter
28. Another Earth
29. Eulogy
30. 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould

That's a good round number. I would have back a while put The Sweet Hereafter on that list, and things like Before Sunrise/Before Sunset on that list but I think that by now they are well appreciated, at least around here.

I would add "Live, Die, Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow)" in the "Underrated" category, as well.

Oh, and I should have thrown "Man on Fire" on the underrated list, IMO.

Well I watched it 2 days ago, the DVD is still sitting on top of the player. That movie is just awful. When it originally came out I actually won tickets to see the critics showing of the movie 2 weeks prior to its release. I was in 6th grade then and in love with the Smash Mouth song that the movie featured. Even then I remember being so let down by the movie. Now at the age of 26, the movie showed up in a box while I was moving into my new house, I watched it, and am still equally unimpressed if not more so.

But hey, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

IMO, and I'll probably get death threats for this - the most overrated movie of all time is:

Star Wars (1977)

Horrible, wooden acting. I recently tried to re-watch it and it was just a terrible experience. I certainly didn't remember it being sooooo bad.

Most overrated movie of 2014 is Boyhood. People have fallen for the gimmick and are ignoring everything, and I mean everything wrong with it.

I need to do a U.S. re-watch, but I agree with the latter.

I enjoy Star Wars (1977) as a good bit of fun, but I think its god-like status is a bit ridiculous. Good call.

I figure that there are certain movies that are 'have to be in the mood for it' movies. If someone watches such a movie once, and they aren't in the mood for it, they may form a very negative opinion and hold it forever more. Something like "Napoleon Dynamite" or "Raising Arizona" or "Nacho Libre" I have to be in the mood for. If I'm not they only sort of funny, but if I am they kill me. If I'd only watched those once, I might have considered them way overrated.
