Nothing remarkable in his directing credits recently beyond the unremarkable Fast and Furiouos 6 and less unremarkable Tokyo drift .
He does seem to stay busy and have a well rounded carreer in the business et,al though so maybe with a good movie script you never know?
Im kinda excited probably more so with Simon Pegg writing the script. Reading over others peoples feelings I kinda have a feeling this one will have that more Gene Rodenberry feeling and not that dark JJ Abrams feel.
Some one needs to start a new space exploration movie series. Something thoughtful and serious. Something with real commentary on this aspect of the human condition. It's staggering to think about: we're stuck on a beautiful little blue marble and one day we're going to have to reach out if we're to survive as a species. I have no problem with action, but let it flow naturally from solid, intellectual sci-fi plots basd on the wonder of exploring the unknown. Fast-forwarding a few hundred years to fill in some scientific blanks is perfectly acceptable.
Kirk racing a Mustang jamming the Beastie Boys, or waking up in bed with a green college girl? Yeah, that gets a movie about the most awesome journey mankind will ever face off to a fantastic start. Does Kirk really need to be presented as an immature hot-headed idiot to make this sort of thing work nowadays? For all of his flaws (and all of the ribbing he's endured over the decades) I never had any problem accepting Shatner's portrayal of Kirk as an excellent, top-of-his class SF officer who would have been chosen for this type of mission.
Pine is more suited for cleaning latrines. There HAS to be a way to do this that encompasses fun and depth simultaneously.
Don't blame Pine for the shortcomings of the script. Or the short comings/ different vision of the producer and director for that matter. Abrams said from the beginning he was going to do away with, or at least have very little of the 'behind the scenes' diplomatic/political backstory that set the tone for the human condition type of tales. We all knew going in that it was going to be wall to wall action.
people jumping off falling things to cliff ledges,
people flying through the air in physics defying ways after being thrown in fight sequences
jumping motorcycles
Beastie Boys music?
Is this Fast and Furious or Star Trek?
Hey, where's Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel? Do they at least get a cameo?
I caught the trailer for this just today; looks....I don't know...a bit ridiculous to be honest. As a diehard fan of the original franchise that ran through both TV and film mediums, there is a TON I can say about Abrams' polarizing 2009 reboot that's not very friendly...but that's been beaten to death already by all the fanboys of the forum world (the off-putting interior sets of the "new" Enterprise, the completely un-charming chemistry between the "new Kirk" and the rest of the crew, the whole Captain Pike setup in the first film...). The sequel, which attempted (and failed miserably) to bring back and re-imagine the Khan character (played so expertly by the late Ricardo Montalban in the "Space Seed" episode and then in The Wrath of Khan, arguably the best Trek film to date), fell on its face for the most part, save for a somewhat exciting hand-to-hand combat sequence at the end between Spock and Khan. With the announcement of this new one, it almost seems like they need to give up on this rebooted franchise already; this is NOT the Trek older fans have come to know and love, and there's too much...I don't know..."modern day influence" on these films, such as the whole Kirk-sleeping-with-the green-alien-chick thing from the 2009 film, which played more like a GAP or Banana Republic ad than a moment in a motion picture, especially when Uhura (the sexy Zoe Saldana) begins taking off her Starfleet uniform as the alien chick's "roommate"...and don't get me started on the use of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in that early scene when it's forced upon us to "understand" that even at a young age, Kirk was rebellious and showed little respect for authority. Whatever.
As such, that's one of the main issues with the trailer for Beyond -- the overuse of this song as a "homage" to 2009's Trek. We get it. Apparently, a young Kirk "enjoys his 1990's white hip hop." I agree that Justin Lin directing was a very odd choice, but I also agree with comments that accompanied the latest trailer which suggested you can feel Lin's influence all over the teaser...it's definitely looking like Fast & Furious in space at this point.
and don't get me started on the use of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in that early scene when it's forced upon us to "understand" that even at a young age, Kirk was rebellious and showed little respect for authority. .
Well we disagree with you. So that's that out of the way.
I'd rather this next movie not be an over-the-top adventure romp but it looks decent and not like the last one so I'm happy with that. It might suck, it might be good. Who knows? Neither you nor I.
excited for a new (another) Trek film. The teaser didn't WOW me like the 2009 movie did. Nor Into Darkness (I liked the Abrams movies, despite the annoying overuse of lens flares).
I have high hopes.. I'm not sure right now. I want to love this movie so so bad... but this may or may not be the one that ruins it for me. As a 30 year Trek fan.. that hurts to think about.

As a 30-year Trek fan, there should be NOTHING here that gives you high hopes. Wasn't it enough that the interior sets of the ship in the 2009 film resembled something out of a Nightmare on Elm Street boiler room?
Somehow I think we actually agree about this movie. I just think it looks like fun, at the least while you despise it at the get-go. I'll at least see it before rushing to that judgement.
You at least need some kind of interjectory notation after the second "that," so it would read "That is that, out of the way" or "That is that...now it's out of the way" et al...
Somehow I think we actually agree about this movie.
I'm, yes, going by this seemingly silly trailer as well as my experience with the previous two Abrams entries -- but I will rent it as well when it comes out for sheer curiosity and to see if my suspicions were warranted.
How many Enterprises will have been destroyed in Star Trek movies with this coming one? Getting a little old, frankly. I want to like it... I really do. And I'm trying to figure out if the main bad guy(s) is a Gem H'darr. Anyone see that dude in the trailer?
I somewhat agree, Charley; after Kirk logically (a bit of pun intended?) blew up the ship at the end of Search for Spock in order to save the crew that came along with him on that mission to return Spock's essence to his body, and we got a look at the Enterprise-A at the end of The Voyage Home (a rather exciting scene), we were then subjected to the Next Generation crew destroying the Enterprise-D (I think it was) in Generations, wasn't it? At any rate, after Kirk's self-destruction decision in III, which was a bittersweet moment for classic Trek fans, it was enough...
My initial reaction was a knee jerk aversion to the sheer amount of destructive mayhem but it is only a 90 second teaser trailer. Judging a whole film from something so minuscule is excessively presumptuous and silly. Perhaps it will turn out to be a fun film.
Anyhow the whole point of of the teaser is to get people excited for the film. For better or worse Trek still carries an aura of stuffiness that needs to be expelled from perceptions of those that are not already fans.
I too have various points of criticism for NuTrek and STID carries the worst of them but despite their shortcomings they are introducing wider audiences to the Trek Universe which is a great thing for the franchise.
Hopefully, CBS does the right thing with the new series and delivers a balance that embraces all the strengths the franchise can provide. A mix of intellectual engagement, adventure, humor, empathy for the Other, comradeship, and aspirations of a greater achievable tomorrow.
Best regards,
KvE
Kirk: Come, come, Mr. Scott. Young minds, fresh ideas. Be tolerant.

You make some very concise, well-contemplated points in your opinions, KMF, which is refreshing....however, I must disagree with you when analyzing the above bolded statement. The "wider audiences" -- i.e. mainly self-entitled millennial types -- will never know what true Trek is by watching these SFX extravaganzas; what you see as a "great thing" for the franchise I see as a shame, really. What's with Spock flirting and having a romance with Uhura? What's with Kirk (Chris Pine) constantly trying to get under his communication officer's skirt (as hot as she is)? I understand that many of these elements were already explored and suggested in older Trek material -- i.e. Kirk was always a womanizing pig who slept with everything, whether it had two legs or 12, and that Uhura tried to come on to Spock a couple of times in the original show -- but what they've done here just smacks of "trying to be socially acceptable" according to what would be considered "cool" today. The result was the out of place sequence in the '09 Trek that had Kirk hiding under the green alien chick's bed when Uhura walks in and begins to take her clothes off, while the two ladies chat it up about Starfleet, men, whatever...I had a hard time even watching it; another example would be the desperate attempt to "appease" fans of the original franchise such as going into detail about how Kirk "tripped up" the Kobayashi Maru simulator test (hinted at throughout Wrath of Khan) as he spins in his chair and munches on an apple (also hinted at in Wrath of Khan). That was a cheap attempt...and utterly pointless.
Hopefully, CBS does the right thing with the new series and delivers a balance that embraces all the strengths the franchise can provide. A mix of intellectual engagement, adventure, humor, empathy for the Other, comradeship, and aspirations of a greater achievable tomorrow.
who is the idiot who approved this music for the trailer? Just because it's directed by Justin Lin doesn't mean they have to use the Fast&Furious soundtrack
Are you referring to the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in the trailer? If so, this song was used in the '09 Trek, as well, suggesting a young Kirk enjoyed listening to (what would be considered in his time) "old school rap music"...
Am I missing another element in the trailer's audio?
I.V., some of examples you mention are also issues I share although my interpretation for the justification of them differ.
It is not a zero sum situation and the most ardent fans need to realize that despite the shortcomings of NuTrek it does indeed serve as a portal for newcomers. They also must acknowledge the various pitfalls and shortcomings the franchise contains over its length tenure.
The benefit of introducing a broader audience to the franchise ensures its longevity. Some, or many, of the new fans may find off putting exactly the same issues some of the old guard have but they have an enormous universe to explore and discover the best of Trek on their own.

Well, of course, everyone is entitled to opinion and viewpoint; I, for one, am of the camp that feels the whole reboot was utterly unnecessary (and I still say doing a prequel may have been a better way to go, depicting the young Kirk, McCoy, Spock and crew going through the Academy, et al, instead of trying to set up this "new universe" using younger versions of the characters; I feel those "prequel-esque" moments in '09's Trek were the most "entertaining," as we got a glance at Spock growing up on Vulcan a little, as well as the way Kirk MAY have behaved as a kid/young cadet, etc.).
At any rate, thank you for your thoughts and an engaging discussion; I just hope Abrams doesn't do to The Force Awakens what he did to Roddenberry's beloved space opus...
I'm excited to have another Trek movie. I loved the old Trek... both the shows and the movies and I loved the new movies as well. Lens flare was fine
The way I see it, the "old" Trek style obviously didn't have mainstream appeal whereas the new movies apparently do. I can enjoy the old stuff for what it was and embrace the new at the same time.
Pretty much my feelings as well. Looking forward to this one, especially since SP was involved writing it. People will always have the old Trek to watch, this is Trek for a new generation and thus really should be different.
I thought the Beastie Boys prohibited the use of their songs for commercial purposes? Wasn't that explicitly stipulated in Adam Yauch's will? I remember them suing a toy company for using their song "Girls" in a viral video a couple years ago.
Old Trek: Mystic Space Artifact puts a virus in the food replicator and makes the crew into either sex deviants or rage maniacs, this disrupts trade negotiations and closes the holodeck. Space Doctor House finds cure and Captain Diplomacy asks permission to shoot guns.
New Trek: Lets not do the stuff the Star Wars prequels did with all that fancy word making like Star Trek always did.
