So....did anyone see this one? I watched it last night. I consider myself to be a gamer but have never played this one but decided to give the movie a whirl.
For someone who has never played the game, I get the impression that the movie adaptation left something out. For the most part, it seemed a bit "shallow" for lack of a better word. I got the impression that there's a deep story and backstory there but it's just not being told here. I like Michael Fassbender and think he did a great job as what I would call an "action hero" role. The action was well done; great fighting and chase scenes. It just felt like I drank a light beer watching this one.
I thought they spent enough time on Fassbender's character and background but not on anyone else and not enough on the main plot-point; the Apple of Eden. What the heck is that thing? How does it work? So Adam bit into a metal apple? What's the deal?
I was also not terribly enthusiastic about the motivations and philosophy. The Templar's want the apple so that they can control all of mankind and eliminate free-will while the Assassins want to stop them and keep people free. Well that's good right? But the Assassin's motto includes something about there is no such thing as morals or integrity, no right or wrong, etc. That doesn't work for me either. Either on a personal level, or in the story. You've got this group that is willing to do anything it takes to get the apple and control humanity while you've got another group that essentially says "the end always justifies the means". To me, this is the same side of the coin and they stand for nearly the same thing as far as that goes. I guess you could say that the Templars are tyrannical while the Assassins are anarchists, but I don't agree with both of those either. They could've done a better job with what the two groups stand for. As it is, I don't really want to root for either of them.
All in all, I was glad I watched it but doubt there will ever be a second viewing for me. I may check out the game at some point but if it's more of the same, I'll pass.
