The Great Wall 2017

Director Zhang Yimou Actor: Matt Damon

Should be a visual epic, whether or not it is any good, waits to be seen.

Exclamation Four thumbs down

One of the worst movies seen in recent memory at a theater. Absolutely terrible that not even Matt Damon could salvage. Bad from the start with awful dialog. But then it was an American-Chinese production in which the Americans and Legendary (now gobbled up by the Chinese) must have had some serious conflicts, relative to the editing of this movie. Legendary had the upper hand here and they managed to co-produce the worst Zhang Yimou movie that I have ever seen. Zhang Yimou's point of view is that if you (Legendary) have paid for it, you can do whatever you want to the movie (see what Weinstein did to The Grand Master (2013)). All of the great looking special effects cannot pull this out of the trash: reminiscent of Aliens and World War Z. And then there is the story line of a myth that is ludicrous (not the monster part, but the weakness of the monsters). Seeing it once, may have been one time too many.

I thought it was a pretty entertaining creature-feature action movie. And funny. Interesting that the monsters did not "look" the least bit convincing to me as anything other than movie special effects. But pulling all the stops to make the monsters look real isn't what matters in a movie like this although that seems to be what most filmmakers devote so much of their attention to. The magic happens in the staging of the action scenes, what it means for the characters, generating suspense prior to the attacks. And on those counts, few modern directors match the skill of Zhang Yimou. In this kind of solid, fun Saturday afternoon matinee monster movie fare, he delivers here, too.

A Woman, A Gun and a Noodle Shop was my first realization that Zhang Yimou could make a truly dreadful movie.

The Grandmaster was Wong Kar-Wai, FYI.

Running Zombies? Blah.. Plus I haven't seen Pitt do a good film since the 90's and I used to be a die hard fan of his. In fact, my nickname kinda sorta came from one his movies. Him and his exwife can both retire as far as I'm concerned.

I still wanna see the great wall though because I tend to like nearly everything Matt Damon puts out, someone I know liked it a lot. Guess we'll see.

Aliens was good. The big Queen was cool and Ripley's battle with her while in the big walker was a great visual as well.

Now I know what your preferences are. I don't agree with it and most of your opinions, but you are entitled to them. Didn't you like the cannon shot???

Yes, I know that. Have you seen the first released version that Weinstein didn't botch up?

No, just that the special effects were similar. Is that clear enough for you?

I remember the cannon being loud, and I remember the rest of the movie being terrible. Beyond that, I've tried to never think of the movie again.

I have not seen either version. It's on my ever-growing list of movies I need to get around to.

It wasn't clear the way you worded it in the last post. It reads like you're saying all three movies were trash.

I no longer live in the USA and have missed all of the "box office flop" buzz on The Great Wall and subsequent trashing of it, which I assume from the joking reference to it on The Oscars has accompanied this one. I saw it in Bangkok with an audience that was very receptive to Damon, the rest of the cast and the movie. So my expectations were that it was a slight, fun creature-feature action movie and on that level I liked it. Not to lead the witness here, but if you are a Damon fan, as I am, I think you will enjoy it. And I'll still say Yimou's set-ups and staging of action scenes, making sure we are in on the character relationships all the while, even in something as slight as this movie, is far superior to that of most other directors on the scene.

I see that overseas apparently likes the film, it has over $300mil gross, only $40 mil in US. From the trailer I see why people arent amped. Watch the the Wolverine trailer, what would you see. This thing will be on BD before Wolverine is even out of the theaters

I knew it was going to be a bomb when I first saw still pics of it. Though a win win for Damon, as I'm sure the pay was huge to entice him to come do this movie for a Chinese film studio and if it was a dud as I'm sure he knew it would be, it would not effect his bankability here in the US at all.
Win, win. I'm sure his friends are patting him on the back for his good fortune and wished the Chinese film industry would throw money their way too.

2. Haven't seen it

Except one is a good zombie movie. The other has Brad Pitt and generic, bloodless zombies.
