Here's samples of how the remaster will look, they're working on a 4k HDR DI for theatrical release.

Was thinking it sounds like the current disc.

But a new 4K re-master would be awesome. Maybe even an immersive audio remix.

A Variety article from last year claimed that Fox (who obtained the film from Warner Bros. with the Regency catalog) were planning a 20th Anniversary Blu-ray edition.

http://variety.com/2015/film/in-cont...ry-1201591475/

However, I'm not aware of any further movement to make that happen.

You said 'original' but this 1986 film has nothing in common with Mann's, except for the title, hasn't it?

If it were anyone else posting, I'd give the benefit of the doubt that perhaps he meant to say that he watched L.A. Takedown, the 1989 TV movie that Heat was based on.

Wow. Written and directed by MM, too. Didn't know that. The movie is on YT, I'll have to check it out when I get some time.

L.A. Takedown was essentially Michael Mann's dry run for Heat. He extensively reworked and expanded it to make the feature.

Yeah, he used to be such a great and vital filmmaker. Shame his last few movies have been such dogs.

On Sept. 7th the Academy will have a 4k DCP screening, then a Q&A with Mann, Pacino, and De Niro, moderated by Christopher Nolan.

Will Pacino and De Niro be at the Q&A or will it be edited to look like they were both there?

This excerpt is from a Gawker blog so take it with a heavy grain of salt. It would explain the audio or lack of

See, there she is being dazzled by the same magicks that have left us feeling all dour and depressed after all of the most recent Mann pictures. Sure Collateral looked great, but where was the genuine tension, where was the human spark that should have made us care about Jamie Foxx's survival? Miami Vice had striking visual moments as well, but was otherwise cold as a fish flopping on a Key West dock. The whole "my partner got shot, oh my god" moments were swallowed up by Mann's turgid music, his gloomy, oppressive lighting. (And about that music. It's a semi-known fact that Mann is going deaf, but still insists on doing his own audio mixing.)

If that were true then the dialog should be a lot louder than it usually is.

Dry run is putting it nicely. I watched most of it last night, I couldn't stick it out for the last act. It seems the minor characters in it went on to do better than the main characters. I think the reason I hung on for as long as I did was because there were parts that were so bad they were "good" (i.e. comical).

No no bud......I saw the movie HEAT from 1986 (I got a bunch of tapes from a friend and this movie was recorded off analogue cable - 1986 -- I guess it doesnt have anything to do with the 1995 one Mr. Kilmer is in (I havent seen that one))

www.imdb.com/title/tt93164

Unfortunetly its "edited for tv" but it was still good........ (I had heard of it but hadnt ever seen it)

Just watched Triple 9, which felt like a sequel to the Heat. Huge cast, shot beautifully, terrific action sequences. Very moody and ambitious but in the end, a bit disappointing in that there is a lack of protagonist you root for.

Probably sounds good on some PSA speakers.
