I just can't fathom why they couldn't find an Asian actress, or even Amerasian, to play the lead. Olivia Munn(?; Newsroom) would be fantastic.

Agree. I would have much preferred a Japanese actress, though I think Scarlett works. It was either the original creator or director of GITS that I saw interviewed the other day on NHK and he sad he was very impressed with Scarlett's performance.

Hello, Planet Earth and the rest of the angry Twitterverse.

This is why "an Asian actress, or even Amerasian" wasn't cast for this movie.

I'm not on the Twitterverse. I'm just an aficionado of the original.

But I haven't seen this new version, so can't speculate on quality. It could be awesome.

I do think the quality will be there and that it'll be quite enjoyable. I don't agree with the decision from a more purist perspective, but I do like SJ, I'm sure she'll be excellent in this production.

Art direction looks good...was this shot in 3D? I imagine it will look better in 3D based on those scenes, even if I prefer watching in 2D. Anyway, definitely looking forward to see this in IMAX.

If this is going to be half as good as it's (1st) trailer...it will be an instant classic in the genre; But I'm a bit sceptical about that

Ghost in the Shell is one of those movies in which the trailer(s) turn out to be a lot better than the actual movie. Meaning that there is the promise of so much more. Too bad that it couldn't deliver.

I'm a fan of GitS. It has so many complex themes. From the reviews it seems none of that is in the movie and they didn't even try to stay at all true to the ethos. Its just another cookie cutter Hollywood action film with a popular face.

I understand why she had to be cast but they could've had a better story. And it seems she's actually
Spoiler!

No one has pointed out that the second female lead is Juliette Binoche, another non-Asian. Clearly Scarlett Johansson will sell a lot more tickets than almost any other actress in the same role. This movie appears to be a joint Chinese production, who are getting their feet wet in the movie business and not doing particularly well (as in The Great Wall). In the closing credits, there is a hair dresser for Scarlett Johansson, even though her hair looks like a bad wig. This movie certainly gets style points for how it looks and how it sounds, but that is not enough. After awhile looking like a bad sequel to Blade Runner gets tiresome.

Earlier today I took a guess at the RT ratings based on how these movies always go. I was 2% off.

The movie is amazingly good... nits itt are funny.

The movie is completely respectful to the original anime and yet different... in my humble O, its much better.

Gone is the need to use dry dialogue to explain every little piece of minutia... and the story is much more concise and striped down.

All the iconic gits scenes are present and they look spectacular.

Nits are funny.

I saw this tonight at a local theater in their theater that has Dolby Atmos.

I'm kinda neutral on this movie: not bad but not great. Interesting visuals, and I'd bet that the audio will sound good in my home system.

The story seemed to have small segments where the story and the shots matched the original movie to a T, but in between those segments were a lot of scenes that differed from the original and built a story that diverged from the original.

I did find it odd that a movie that took place in an asian large city had a majority of primary characters played by non-asian actors.

From the trailers I saw I did not know that Juliette Binoche was in this movie. I have always thought she is one of the most classically beautiful actresses I've ever seen. Any movie with her in it earns points in my book.

Packing a lot of sound into a small room.
268 square feet/2144 cubic feet
7.2 surround sound.

Am I the only one thinking the whole "non-asian" outrage is a bit silly?

...Where was the outrage when the original creators made their characters look like non-asian people???

Ever since I started watching japanese animation I've always noticed that these characters are more than often designed to look like caucasian, or "white" people (pale skin, giant blue eyes, hair, etc).

By the way, I saw the movie yesterday, liked it quite a bit but would have liked more depth to some the characters. The music was very cool, had a bit of a Tron Legacy vibe to it. Amazing visuals and excellent audio - I'll buy it for sure.

It is not outrage. Just an observation. As to your observation about looking more Caucasian, take into consideration that there is a mind set in Japan about some foreign things being somehow better than Japanese products. Designer labels?

Nope, not alone.
Future metropolis would have people from all over the world. Look at present day New York City, you will see tons of people with varying ethnicity.

All I'm going to say is The Lost Boys came out in 1987 and Ghost in the Shell animation came out in 1995.

Perhaps not outrage from you, but there is quite a lot of "Racist Hollywood needs to burn to the ground!" outrage about this movie all over the internet.

Meanwhile, practically none of the characters in the original manga or anime looked Asian.

There was even a portion of the second graphic novel where Motoko Kusanagi was a Blonde Woman.

The irony is, Hollywood is more sensitive than a lot of other countries on this issue. (Partly because, hey, diversity helps your movie pull in the international box office. I.E., Donnie Yen and Rogue One.)

Also, the Ghost in the Shell franchise has always pushed the idea that we may be able to switch appearance as we see fit.

I was only disappointed that an Asian actress wasn't cast because I have a bias towards their under representation in film outside of kung fu films. But as far as racism is concerned... it's low on the problems list. O_o
