Good ole Country music y'all!

Post and discuss your favorite country, western and bluegrass music, videos, and performers here.

I will confess up front that I'm not a huge fan of this genre. One reason is that pretty much all the radio stations where I grew up were country stations. So I got sick of it pretty quick, simply because there wasn't much else available to listen to. Another is the (perceived, on my part) lack of diversity in the genre.

About the closest I've gotten to country artists in recent years is the occasional Taylor Swift video, and some Regional Mexican music. Though I've enjoyed alot of work by country artists in the past, mostly others (like Swift) with some degree of cross-over appeal such as Glen Campbell, Willie Nelson, Shania Twain, Olivia Newton-John, John Denver, Johnny Cash, and folks of that general ilk.

It seems like the genre has changed and evolved a fair amount since I was a kid though. And I'm willing to be educated on what's new and hip, and also what's old and hip in this medium.

The picture above is of George Jones and Tammy Wynette btw, for those who may not know. A very popular duo in their day. And the one below is Shania.

Very, very little country music I can tolerate.

But I do enjoy many of the classics from Johnny Cash, and many songs from Lyle Lovett.

If I had something that could play it, yes.

My ears, headphones, amp, and EQ are all analog though. Does that count?

Great thread topic. The Waybacks are one of my favorite 'newgrass' bands. They put out some really good albums years ago. Top notch musicianship. Two of my favorites; Devolver and From the Pasture to the Future

Spent a little time this morning browsin through some recent country MVs, just to get my feet wet. And I was disappointed by alot (but not all) of what I found.

Alot of pretty blondes, and burly-lookin dudes in wife-beaters and cowboy hats singing corny lyrics with fake "twang" (really drawl) in their voices,... and waitresses that look like they'd be more at home on a catwalk than behind a counter serving grits and hash. Here's one example of what I mean...

This isn't as wretched as most of em. The lyrics are ok, and the song has a pretty nice vibe to it. And the arrangement reminds me a bit of some old Campbell songs I like. But it's still just a cliché (within a cliché) looking for a place to hang its ten gallon hat. At least Mr. Lynch is honest about his clichéd-ness though, and puts it right in the title of the song, so you know exactly what you're gettin. So props to him for that.

I feel the same about alot of hip-hop btw. The clichés are different, and more "gangsta". But it's often the same kind of thing, over and over again (like country music), just with different packaging for a different audience.

There were a few songs I liked though (in addition to Mr. Lynch's). And one or two that I thought were actually pretty peachy, like this one by Hillary Scott & the Scotts...
