Wow is right. The Southern Reach trilogy AKA Area X by Jeff Vandermeer is a surreal, creepy, horrifying read, and the first book, Annihilation, won the Nebula Award.


AFAICT, the screenplay covers only the first volume of the trilogy, but IMO that should work just fine even without any sequel(s). Directed by Alex Garland of Ex Machina.

Here's Vandermeer on the movie:

Apparently the rights were purchased while the novel was still in manuscript form, a year before it was released to the public.
