Throughout all the threads, there is mention of region 2 titles which are better than region 1.

But region 2 is either UK or Japan.

Is there a difference in the two of them?

Anyone has a list of Japan titles which are better than region 1?

Yes there is. Japan is NTSC and region 2 is not only UK but all of Europe and it is PAL.

Region 1 is NTSC too, right?

From what I've gathered so far in this forum, the following japanese titles are better or not available in Region 1 :-

Jurassic park Superbit
Jurassic park2 Superbit
Blade DTS
Gladiator superbit
Cliffhanger DTS
Terminator DTS
Cutthroat Island DTS

Anything else?

Many Hong Kong Legends (HKL) titles (UK, region 2, PAL) are better than their R0, R1 or Japanese R2 counterparts:

Try Ronin DTS version or Blade fullbitrate DTS, i have Cutthroat Island and X Men 2 from Japan too and have on order Tomb Raider DTS ((first one ))
in december True Lies DTS and Heat and Sleepy Hollow are released and the list grows bigger and the quality of japanese releases is first class and theyre all english original language with good packaging, albeit japanese writing on the packaging, as far as i'm aware Japan and Korea are the only 2 countries now releasing Full DTS bitrate soundtracks on some of their films.

I've seen some Japan titles but due to japanese packaging are unable to distinguish much of the features.

For example, if I see the DTS logo at the back cover for Blade or Tomb raider, does that mean full bit rate? Or are there 2 DTS versions?

Hi Foxymulder, care to share with us the list?

How does one distinguish between full bit rate and not... from the cover or just luck?

I've seemed to understand a little now about Japanese titles. There seems to be few types of releases. There's the normal ones and then there's the special editions/deluxe ones with the DTS tracks. There are some with superbit titles too.

Saw a special edition of Malena, do you think that's the uncensored one (the scene with the boy and Malena)?

Theres no way to tell from the packaging but the company releasing is an indication for example the Superbit titles in Japan tend to be 768kb/s DTS bitrate, Terminator Ultimate edition is a full bitrate DTS release as is the version of Blade uv ordered. heres a site listing most of the DTS releases available around the globe.

Do you have a URL where such titles can be bought? I see a lot of Asian DVDs on ebay but I would like to know an address where I can order them from (in English).

Has demo'ed my Jurassic Park and Spiderman Superbits. Outstanding picture detail and quality, compared them with my R1 version and they're supreme.

Blade DTS has blown my previous R1 version away in terms of sound. I used to dread the part where Blade kicks butt in the rave disco. The gunshots in R1 were weak and without impact but this time round, the gunshots are powerful and clear.

From my observation, I tend to think DTS brings out the crisp and high frequencies (forward soundfields) whereas DD brings out the lower-end frequencies (bassier).

Coming December is Full DTS bitrate versions of Sleepy Hollow and True Lies and Heat is also being released, also The Core, Sleepers and Equilibrium and Superbits of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Glory Jerry Maguire and Stand By Me, Personally i don't think a Superbit version of Close Encounters will be much better than the version i already own but i'm looking forward to a DTS anamorphic version of True Lies with a Full DTS bitrate and Sleepy Hollow.

The Terminator is being re-released with full DTS bitrate and The Big Blue is coming too, Scream for example is the directors cut in DTS with the 30 seconds or so of gore that they cut for the R rating in america intact.

Hi FoxyMulder, are you referring to releases in Japan?

I saw the terminator DTS on the shelf, but didn't get it.... had doubts about the impact of the soundtrack from an old movie. Are you referring to the ones on the shelf or a new one yet to be released?

Can't wait for true lies and the core too.

Is Scream to be released in December as well? How did you get the info? Your previous link seems to be down at the moment.

Scream is already out in Japan and is the directors cut, or i should say full version with the additional gore they couldnt show in the R Rated american cut, Terminator i refer to is the original although the new one is also out soon, i belong to the british AV forums site and they have reliable info there, access to various sites and people who work for review magazines.

The Terminator Ultimate Edition's DTS track is half bit-rate. I have the disc. I've measured the bit rate. It's 754 kbs, as are other MGM DTS discs from Japan that I own (Ronin, Manhunter).

My region-free player (Malata N996) has a menu screen that will provide this info. Actually, it has dozens of menu screens and once you get the hang of using them it can tell you just about anything you ever need to know about the disc you're playing.

The Pioneer DV-45a also shows the video bitrate when you press the Display/Info button on the remote.

I'm aware of players which are capable of showing video bitrate, but what I've yet to hear is of showing audio bitrate.

Yes, it has separate listings for video and audio. Most DVD players only provide the video bit rate.

Speed DTS Ultimate Edition
The Core DTS (full bitrate)
Predator DTS Ultimate edition
Moulin Rouge DTS ultimate edition
Hulk DTS edition
Blade 2

Any precious DVD which I missed out that's not available in other regions? I was actually thinking of getting the Malena uncut version but it had no english subtitles... sigh
