What an awesome movie this is. For me, this was one of the most entertaining movies I have seen in recent years, absolutely superb!
I just hope that the DVD release is of high quality. Any ideas from you guys as to when the release will be?

Uhmm...the movie is still playing in theaters (a remake of the 60's "The Fall Of The Roman Empire," sort of, but is a great flick anyway; it got me going back to the cinema since Star Wars: TPM!), so a video release is still some months away...

Wasn't it Dreamworks who released this one (I missed the very begining prior to the first scene)? If so, I am sure a video transfer will be a knockout! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yes Frank, its a Dreamworks film, so we can expect something really special for the DVD.

I thought it was great film too...and if you didnt already know, the DVD is supposed to feature a longer cut of the film. See this interview with the film's editor Tobias Scalia, which suggests that the DVD is already being prepared:

Uncle, run out to the cinema and see this film,it's well above average. Won't it open in Europe soon or already? This is an old-style epic and the story loses a little steam by the end,but I was impressed with the digital editing.Rome looks magnificent!

I heard q1 2001, but a recent post at hometheaterforum hinted at a late q4 2000 release.

Lloyd,

Thanks for the confirmation that Dreamworks produced Gladiator...

Hope the DVD does include extra footage. Sometimes excized footage makes a lot of sense when added back to a film that might othewise seem to have holes; vide Tombstone...the laserdisc version showed footage that was cut so theater owners would be happy (rats!), which helped explain why certain scenes seemed to be sucked into a black hole!
The DVD release, although looking a bit better, lacked that special feature, video enhacement, and the soundtrack was emasculated to boot(the PCM track on the laserdisc is magnificent!), sounding as if low bass was also sucked by that same black hole. This great Western cries for a HD mastered, anomorphic enhanced, double-layered, reworked soundtrack DVD in a so-called Director's Cut release that include the missing footage...

Rachael,

Estas segura que el teatro the de la casa nos da cultura? Claro que si! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Not soon enough. I saw this at the theater last night and what a poor set up. The movie was shifted to the right about a foot off the screen. The sound wasn't much better. Hooray for home theater.

Too bad, what a beautiful movie to get kicked in the teeth like that,Tim! I would of asked for a free pass to another film.Recently,I was at a theatre where they forgot to put the masking part on the projector that creates the aspect ratio.I could see booms and mikes from time to time. I informed the manager and got a pass.

Hey Everybody,
I must be in love with this movie, saw it again last night in london at a quality venue........Absolutely mesmerising...Have you noticed how great the photography is....Forgeting the action scenes and the computer special effects for a moment, take a look at the subtle way crowes hand sweeps past the (barley I think)using wide aperture to focus his hand and leave everything else unfocused and hazy plus loads of other neat little touches........I think this is Ridley Scotts best movie to date.

Yes, I look forward to the DTS special edition of Gladiator.
Looking forward to an additional 20-30 minutes of added footage that supposedly enhance the film. Not sure why Ridley decided not to include them on the theatrical release...

(Also, I blew out my Dynaudio tweeters in my car with the Gladiator soundtrack).

Uncle Eric,

Youre not the only one. Ive watched this four times already.

I was thinking about how the DVD will look...and how that foreboding scene with Crowe and the gladiators walking through the market before the first fight and dye drips on them like blood...that will be a killer test of the reds on any display system.

Uncle Eric

Yes I know London well and really like it.

Unfortunately I wont be there anytime soon because of commitments at work. Its strange but some the fondest memories I have are of Screen 1 at Empire Leciester Square and Screens 5 and 7 at Warners West End...some of the best THX screens Ive ever experienced.

Anyway, this unofficial fan site on "Gladiator" mentions a 1Q 2001 DVD release. http://spielberg-dreamworks.com/glad...test_News.htm. Of course, the veracity of the information is open to question.

Nevertheless, I hope its sooner than that.
