Just got word today from dvdfile.com that a horde of Alfred Hitchcock special editions will be released on 3/6 which include Frenzy, Family Plot, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Topaz, Torn Curtain and some real great ones such as Shadow of a Doubt and Saboteur. All are getting the remastered, anamorphic widescreen treatment (except Saboteur and Shadow of a Doubt which will be presented in full screen)with special features and the usual cleanup.

In addition some more recent classics are coming in February such as Ordinary People, Terms of Endearment.

Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon...with nail polish.

Ted, I got into LDs back in '87. Ummm, love those big discs! ZARDOZ is one of my favourites too! For one of the older widescreen LDs it's well above average. But, when the DVD comes out, I'll be grabbing one. Sean is so cute in his boots and diaper outfit, and this is one of the most intresting, off-the-wall sci-fi stories ever. I can't wait to get lost in the vortex again. Best wishes from vortex 17!

Frank, BEN HUR is due out 3 March 2001. It supposed to be 2.76 to 1, with commentary by C. Heston. YAHOOOOO! Best Wishes! I think the aspect ratio is going to freak people out, if it turns out to be true. I think the studios want to try to force original aspect ratio on the public via DVD. Think about it, if barless DVDs make a good master for VHS, in their minds , maybe they don't want to sell pan & scan DVDs, for this paranoia. It does seem the two sided WS/P & S discs do seem to be disapearing, or are fewer. I'm suprised that they wouldn't crop this film down, some. Like 2.55 to 1, like it once played, or more. I just know folks like my cousin and her hubby won't like "those bars". As DVD filters down, the black bars are going to be more contraversal than folks would like or hope, proably. If my cuz fills out one of those post cards, she's gonna ask for P & S. I always, fill them out if they're postage-paid, and vote for WS. Well, best wishes mi amigo!

Rachael,

Those are great news, "gatita del disco Grande"! Yahoooo, indeed! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

The one thing that I have some misgivings about is the aspect ratio...not so much for what will be extreme but because of what happened with the original video transfer for widescreen laserdisc pressings; an absolute visual abhorrence. Hopefully WB have a new transfering master and not the same one used by MGM for the laserdiscs we have come to know...

Frank, to repeat what I hard discussed elsewhere. Somebody claimed that the 2.76 to 1 master was created by cropping a 2.55 to 1 picture down, shorter. They claimed that only two copies of the 70 mm orignal exists. And, that a proper release would need to made from those elements. So, they were worried that the disc could, might be made from elements used to make one of the several LD releases, not a new master from the 70 mm elements. I'm not too knowledge about these things. I'm just repeating what I heard. Any DVD is going to beat the LD I own, no matter how poor a DVD it is! My hopes are they will do this things right, maybe really right. If my LD is cropped from a 2.55 print, a proper disc will be taller, right? At least a little, eh? Best wishes!

I trust the DVD release of BEN-HUR will be anamorphic, not merely windowboxed like the LD?!! PLEASE!!!

Assuming it will be anamorphic, will the 2.76:1 AR be horizontally compressed to 1.77:1? An image height commensurate with a 1.77:1 ratio would benefit resolution and minimize the black bars. Using a CI scaler or an HTPC with a 1.33 display, couldn't you also do a vertical stretch to the 1.33:1 height and then use an ISCO anamorphic lens to restore the proper horizontal dimension? That would be great!

Rachael, Tom,

As I understand, the only ANOMORPHIC 70mm theatrical print of Ben-Hur in existence is been shown in Los Angeles this week at the Chinese Mann theater, I believe. The print was specially flown from Australia for this memorable occasion. Other 70mm exhibitions of Ben-Hur will be shown from spherical prints, which are cropped.
Still the question remains: do WB have the original anomorphic 70mm film elements on hand with which to do a new HD anomorphic master? If so, have they been restored? Who really knows...

Now, if Ben-Hur is to be transfered onto DVD with an aspect ratio of 2:55:1 then the resultant image height will be TALLER, but some side cropping will occur. I would prefer a small loss of of image sides in favor of greater VERTICAL resolution, which will be aided by the enhancement process...but it is possible that even that with an aspect ratio of 2:76:1 (very radical) the image will still contain enough resolution to be watchable IF indeed proceeds from a HD master and IF the DVD is "enhanced for 16x9 TVs." Since it would come from WB, I wager it will be an anomorphically enhanced DVD. Rachael, this will be satifactory, yes?

Tom, the Isco lens will treat the 2:76:1 aspect ratio the same it does any other ratio, but will help decreasing the size of the black bars, which will be far greater with this movie than anything else that is widescreen and on video. I am not expecting problems with horizontal overstretch, but are not 100% sure.

Anyway, I would select the CI's aspect ratio controller to the STANDARD setting and then let the Isco do the squeeze. This will take full advantage of the anomorphic enhancement...

Well...it seems that it is official: both Ben-Hur and The Greatest Story Ever Told (another movie photographed in the Ultra-Panavision 70mm anomorphic format) will be released in March of 2001.

Both films will be shown on DVD in anomorphic widescreen in their original aspect ratio of 2:76:1, 5.1 soundtracks, and a host of other features...for better or for worse...
